Is KitchenAid Worth It? 2026 Review

The classic Artisan is still the KitchenAid to buy, but only in a color that is on sale. Here is how much the discounts vary, which mixers reviewers say fail, and why ordering direct carries its own risks.

We may earn a commission if you buy through our links, once we join a brand's program. It never changes a call. How that works.

Best time to buy
Now, if your color is discounted. In late October KitchenAid ran Early Black Friday deals of up to $200 off select stand mixers, but the same model’s price varied by color.

KitchenAid sells its stand mixers, attachments and countertop appliances directly on its US site, alongside the major appliances made by parent company Whirlpool. Mixer list prices run from $449.99 for the Deluxe and Artisan Mini to $1,049.99 for a commercial 8-quart model.

Discounts are frequent but uneven. In late October the Artisan 5-quart was $349.99 in Juniper and $499.99 in Empire Red, the same mixer. Our advice: pick the model first, then shop the colors for the lowest price. Buying direct gets free 60-day returns, but read the low reviews: they describe cancelled orders, mixers that arrived looking used, and refunds that took months.

The 5 we looked at

01Smart buyBest for: Most home bakers

Artisan® Series 5 Quart Tilt-Head Stand Mixer

$499.99 Juniper was $349.99 in late October; Empire Red stayed at $499.99.

The 5-quart tilt-head mixer most people picture, with 37,367 reviews behind it and frequent color-specific discounts.

The Artisan KSM150PS has a 5-quart stainless steel bowl, 10 speeds and a tilt-back head, and it comes with a coated flat beater, coated dough hook and wire whip. Its front hub takes KitchenAid’s optional attachments. It averages 4.8 from 37,367 reviews, one of the largest review bases of any kitchen appliance.

With that volume, the 818 one- and two-star reviews matter more than the average. The recent ones describe heads that will not lock and bounce while kneading, grinding gears, a unit that sparked, and mixers that arrived looking refurbished. Others never received their order or had it cancelled. Buy it in a discounted color, check the head lock on day one, and keep the 60-day return window in mind.

Why it's smart

  • 4.8 average from 37,367 reviews
  • Discounted to $349.99 in some colors
  • Works with the full range of hub attachments

The catch

  • Reviewers report head-lock and bouncing problems
  • Some buyers say their unit arrived looking used

The numbers

  • Bowl 5 qt stainless steel
  • Speeds 10
  • Included flat beater, dough hook, wire whip
  • Color read Juniper

02Good buyBest for: Smaller batches on a budget

Deluxe 4.5 Quart Tilt-Head Stand Mixer

$449.99 Mineral Water Blue was $299.99 in late October, a $150 saving.

The cheapest full-size KitchenAid tilt-head mixer when on sale, with a slightly smaller bowl than the Artisan.

The Deluxe KSM97 is the entry tilt-head: a 4.5-quart stainless bowl with a handle, 10 speeds, a coated flat beater, coated dough hook and 6-wire whip. It averages 4.55 from 2,107 reviews. On sale at $299.99 it costs $50 less than the discounted Artisan, for half a quart less capacity.

The lowest reviews cluster around a few faults. Several owners say the speed lever would not switch the mixer off, springing back to speed 3. Others describe bowls popping off the base with a dough hook, a loose tilt head after a few uses, and a constant squeak. At least one waited weeks for a replacement bowl that was backordered.

Why it's smart

  • Lowest sale price for a full-size tilt-head
  • Same 10 speeds and attachment hub as the Artisan

The catch

  • Reports of the off switch failing
  • Bowl can pop off with heavy dough, owners say

The numbers

  • Bowl 4.5 qt stainless with handle
  • Speeds 10
  • Included flat beater, dough hook, 6-wire whip
  • Color read Mineral Water Blue

03Good buyBest for: Big batches and heavy dough

7 Quart Bowl-Lift Stand Mixer with Redesigned Premium Touchpoints

$699.99 Black Matte was $499.99 in late October, $200 off.

A large bowl-lift mixer with seven accessories in the box, worth it only at the sale price.

The 7-quart bowl-lift raises the bowl with a lever rather than tilting the head, and KitchenAid claims twice the power in the bowl of its tilt-head mixers. It has 11 speeds, including a half speed for folding, and the box is generous: a double flex edge beater, stainless flat beater, spiral dough hook, stainless pastry beater with scraper, and an 11-wire whip.

Its rating is lower, 4.12 from 1,489, with 254 one- and two-star reviews. Three recent ones describe mixers sold as new that arrived scratched and dirty in thin packaging. Others report a high-pitched motor whine, slipping gears with dense dough, an order cancelled after a sale ended, and one owner who says it is weaker than the pre-2022 7-quart.

Why it's smart

  • Seven accessories, including a spiral dough hook
  • $200 off in late October

The catch

  • Several buyers say it arrived used or scratched
  • Reports of motor whine and slipping gears

The numbers

  • Bowl 7 qt stainless steel
  • Speeds 11, plus a half speed
  • Design bowl-lift
  • Color read Black Matte

04Wait for a saleBest for: Bowl-lift fans with less space

KitchenAid® 5.5 Quart Bowl-Lift Stand Mixer

$499.99 No discount shown in October, the same price as the 7-quart on sale.

A mid-size bowl-lift mixer that makes little sense while the bigger 7-quart sells for the same money.

The 5.5-quart bowl-lift has the 7-quart’s 11 speeds and half-speed folding setting, a 3-point locking bowl, a coated flat beater, coated dough hook and 6-wire whip. In October it was $499.99, exactly what the 7-quart cost on sale with more accessories, which is why we would wait for its own discount.

It averages 4.26 from 2,105 reviews. The lowest ones describe gears found chipped inside a mixer under two years old, no way to buy small replacement gears, a bowl that does not lift high enough for the beater to reach the bottom, and units shutting off mid-mix. One buyer also says KitchenAid cancelled two separate orders for mixers listed as in stock.

Why it's smart

  • Bowl-lift stability in a smaller size
  • 11 speeds with a half-speed fold

The catch

  • Same price as the sale 7-quart
  • Reports of chipped gears and a low bowl lift

The numbers

  • Bowl 5.5 qt stainless steel
  • Speeds 11, plus a half speed
  • Included flat beater, dough hook, 6-wire whip
  • Color read Black Matte

05PassBest for: Very small kitchens only

Artisan® Mini 3.5 Quart Tilt-Head Stand Mixer

$449.99 Ice color, no discount shown in late October.

A smaller, lighter tilt-head that costs more than a full-size Artisan on sale.

The Artisan Mini has a 3.5-quart bowl, about 5 dozen cookies by KitchenAid’s measure, and comes with a flex edge beater, coated dough hook and 6-wire whip. KitchenAid says it is lighter and smaller but just as powerful as its Classic mixer, and it takes the same hub attachments. It averages 4.51 from 996 reviews.

We pass because of price. At $449.99 with no discount, it cost $100 more than the full-size Artisan on sale in late October. The low reviews also mention rust on the bowl and accessories, a dough hook coupling shedding black coating, units that arrived scratched or seemingly used, and returns where the refund took over a month.

Why it's smart

  • Smaller footprint, same attachment hub
  • Includes a flex edge beater

The catch

  • Costs more than a discounted full-size Artisan
  • Reports of rust and shedding coating

The numbers

  • Bowl 3.5 qt stainless steel
  • Included flex edge beater, dough hook, whip
  • Color read Ice

The review pile, summarized

KitchenAid’s own mixer reviews are strong on average: 4.8 from 37,367 for the Artisan, 4.55 for the Deluxe, and about 4.1 to 4.3 for the bowl-lift models. Trustpilot is the opposite: 1.3 from 2,066 reviews, 89% one-star, on an unclaimed profile that mixes in Whirlpool-built dishwashers, ranges and refrigerators.

Sorted lowest first, the mixer complaints are as much about buying direct as about the machines. Buyers describe orders cancelled without explanation, tracking that never moved, mixers sold as new that arrived scratched or dirty, long phone holds and refunds that took more than two months after a return. Product complaints center on head locks, gears and switches. Positive reviews describe mixers lasting decades.

Rivals worth a look

  • Breville. Choose it instead if service reputation weighs most; Breville rated 4.3 on Trustpilot from 13,751 reviews in October, though it invites reviews and KitchenAid does not.
  • Kenwood. Choose it instead if you want a different mixer maker with a better record; its global Trustpilot profile rated 4 from about 7,000 reviews in October.

Quick questions

Why does the same KitchenAid mixer cost different amounts?

Discounts are applied by color. In late October the Artisan 5-quart was $349.99 in Juniper and $499.99 in Empire Red, and the Deluxe 4.5-quart was $299.99 in Mineral Water Blue. KitchenAid also says signed-in customers can unlock lower prices on selected products. Choose the model first, then check each color before buying.

How do I return a KitchenAid stand mixer?

Call the countertop returns team at 1-800-541-6390 within 60 days of shipment. They email a prepaid label, and return shipping is free only for US customers who start the return by phone. The mixer must be new and unused, in its original packaging. KitchenAid says refunds post within 7 to 10 business days once processed, but several reviewers waited much longer, so keep tracking records.

Should I buy a KitchenAid replacement plan?

Only if you weigh the risk. Product pages offer one-, three- and five-year stand mixer plans at $19.95, $50.87 and $74.81 on top of the limited standard warranty. Several low reviews describe mixers failing just after the warranty ended and owners being unable to buy small internal parts, which is the case these plans are designed for.
