How we pick

The research, the four calls and the arithmetic behind every Smart Score.

Every article starts with the brand's own website: the product pages for the models we cover, the price for each size or configuration, and the policy pages (trial, returns, warranty, shipping, support, financing). We note the month we read them. Then we read what buyers say, lowest ratings first, on Trustpilot, the Better Business Bureau where we can reach it, and the brand's own review widgets. Recurring complaints beat one-off rants.

Nothing here is lab work. We have not used the products ourselves, and an article will never suggest otherwise. The value we add is reading carefully and doing the arithmetic.

The calls

Smart buy
The one model in the range we would point most people to. Exactly one per article.
Good buy
A sound choice for a specific person or need. Buy it at the regular price without regret.
Wait for a sale
Worth owning, priced too high most of the year. The brand's own sale pattern tells you when.
Pass
Sold, popular, and not worth it for most people. Used sparingly, at most once per article.

The Smart Score

Each brand gets four sub-scores from 1 to 5. The Smart Score is their weighted average, shown to one decimal place out of 5.0:

PartWeightWhat it covers
Product35%How well the range is made and specified, read from the brand's own product pages and from what owners report after months of use.
Value30%What you get for the money against direct rivals, how often sales knock the price down, and whether the cheaper tier does most of the job.
Policies20%Trial length, return costs, warranty terms and the exclusions buried in them.
Buying experience15%Delivery, support and how problems get handled, mostly from the lowest-rated reviews on Trustpilot, BBB and the brand's own site.

Nobody gets a 5.0. A perfect brand would need perfect products, perfect prices and a returns desk run by saints, and we have not found one. Scores compare brands in the same category best; a 4.3 for a mattress maker and a 4.3 for a grill maker are not a head-to-head.

Prices and timing

Prices are the list prices shown on the brand's US site in the month printed on the article, before codes and before any sale discount unless we say otherwise. "From" means the smallest size or cheapest configuration. The "best time to buy" line comes from what the brand's own site says about sales, plus the sale banners we saw while researching. It is a pattern, not a promise.
