Whisker (Litter-Robot) Review: The Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes to Buy in 2026
Whisker’s Litter-Robot is the self-cleaning litter box to beat, but it is expensive and finicky. The Litter-Robot 5 at $799 is the smart buy, with a 90-day trial as your safety net.
We may earn a commission if you buy through our links, once we join a brand's program. It never changes a call. How that works.
- Skip the upgrade
- Skip the $999 Litter-Robot 5 Pro. Its cameras add video and visual cat ID, but reviewers report flaky recognition and video features lean on Whisker+ after year one.
- Best time to buy
- In October, Whisker took $75 off select Litter-Robot bundles and up to $100 off reconditioned units. Buy where you can use the full 90-day trial before the holidays.

Whisker sells four Litter-Robot models, from the compact EVO at $599 to the camera-equipped 5 Pro at $999, plus a Feeder-Robot and a raft of accessories. The pitch is simple: the globe rotates after each visit, sifts out clumps into a sealed drawer, and you stop scooping.
The value question is which model, and whether to buy new. The Litter-Robot 5 costs only $100 more than the older Litter-Robot 4 and adds WasteID, a 30-pound cat limit and a bigger drawer. Reconditioned units save $35 to $75. Whatever you choose, lean on the 90-day in-home trial, but budget for return shipping: Whisker deducts $60 for a label, and an unclean unit can cost a $75 cleaning fee.
What to buy (and what not to)
Litter-Robot 5
$799 Base unit. A 3-year WhiskerCare extension is $149 extra.
The current flagship without cameras: up to 5 cats, cats from 3 to 30 pounds, and WasteID odor control.
The Litter-Robot 5 is the model we would buy. Whisker rates it for up to five cats weighing 3 to 30 pounds, says one cat can go about 10 days between drawer emptyings, and adds WasteID, which tells urine from solid waste and times the cycle to suit. It keeps the same 22 by 27 inch footprint as the Litter-Robot 4 with more headroom, works on carpet without an add-on, and comes with a step and five drawer liners.
Its on-site rating is 4.7 from 290 reviews. The low ones are specific: one owner says an interior ledge stops waste falling about one cycle in five, another reports litter spilling when the full drawer is pulled, and a third could not finish onboarding. Use the 90-day trial to find out early.
Upside
- Rated for 5 cats and cats up to 30 lbs
- Only $100 more than the Litter-Robot 4
- Works on carpet without a tray add-on
Downside
- Some owners report waste catching on an interior ledge
- Whisker+ insights cost extra after any trial
The numbers
- Cats up to 5, 3-30 lbs
- Footprint 22 x 27 inches, 29.9 inches tall
- Drawer about 10 days for one cat
- Weight 28.7 lbs empty

Litter-Robot EVO
$599 Base unit. A 3-year warranty extension is $99.
The compact, cheapest Litter-Robot, for up to two cats between 3 and 19 pounds.
EVO is the Litter-Robot for smaller homes and smaller cats. It is about 20.6 by 24.3 inches and 27.6 inches tall, so it fits where the bigger models will not, and Whisker rates it for up to two cats weighing 3 to 19 pounds, with about seven days between drawer emptyings for one cat. It includes a step, fence, liners and a carbon filter.
The limits are worth taking seriously. A 19-pound ceiling rules out large breeds, and Whisker’s comparison chart shows EVO only notifies you when the drawer is full rather than tracking its level. Reviews are few, 84 at 4.7 stars, and the lone one-star review calls it flimsy and full of false bonnet-removed errors. A reconditioned EVO was $564 in October.
Upside
- Cheapest new Litter-Robot at $599
- Smallest footprint in the range
Downside
- 19-pound cat limit and two-cat maximum
- Drawer sensing only alerts when full
The numbers
- Cats up to 2, 3-19 lbs
- Footprint 20.6 x 24.3 inches, 27.6 inches tall
- Drawer about 7 days for one cat
- Weight 21.5 lbs empty

Litter-Robot 5 Reconditioned
$724 Down from $799 new; limited stock.
A manufacturer-reconditioned Litter-Robot 5 with the same 90-day in-home trial as a new one.
Whisker explains that its reconditioned units were generally sold new and then sent back under the 90-day trial, then restored and resold. The Litter-Robot 5 version was $724 in October against $799 new, and the product page carries the same 90-day in-home trial and free shipping to the contiguous US.
The saving is modest, so check two things before choosing it. Stock is limited, by Whisker’s own description. And the reconditioned page does not display the 1-year warranty badge that new units show, though it describes WhiskerCare coverage; confirm the warranty term at checkout. Reviews of Whisker’s reconditioned Litter-Robot 4 units on its site are largely positive, with owners saying units arrived looking unused.
Upside
- $75 less than a new Litter-Robot 5
- Same 90-day in-home trial
Downside
- Warranty term not shown as clearly as on new units
- Limited stock, by Whisker’s own description
The numbers
- Model Litter-Robot 5
- Condition manufacturer-reconditioned
- Trial 90 days in home

Litter-Robot 5 Pro
$999 Includes 1 year of Whisker+, then $7.99 a month or $79.90 a year.
The Litter-Robot 5 with two built-in AI cameras, live video and visual cat identification.
The Pro is a Litter-Robot 5 with dual cameras for live streaming, recording and visual cat identification, and it bundles a year of Whisker+. After that, Whisker+ is $7.99 a month or $79.90 a year, and it is what unlocks unlimited streaming and 30 days of video history.
Its on-site rating is 4.5 from 340 reviews, with more one-star reviews than the plain 5. Owners describe cat recognition that identifies one cat but not another, frequent offline spells, a Maine Coon too large to fit comfortably, and litter waste from over-cycling. One expected health tracking from the camera that does not exist. A Trustpilot reviewer called the subscription for camera features a significant drawback. Unless you need video, the $799 Litter-Robot 5 does the cleaning for $200 less.
Upside
- Live video and visual cat ID
- First year of Whisker+ included
Downside
- Reviewers report flaky recognition and offline spells
- Video features need Whisker+ after year one
The numbers
- Cats up to 5, 3-30 lbs
- Cameras dual, integrated
- Whisker+ $7.99/mo or $79.90/yr after year one
- Weight 29.6 lbs empty

Litter-Robot 4
$699 Base unit. Reconditioned from $664; 3-year warranty extension $129.
The best-selling older model, with by far the most reviews and the most documented complaints.
The Litter-Robot 4 has 13,585 reviews on Whisker’s site averaging 4.5, and many owners have run one for years. It handles up to four cats weighing 3 to 25 pounds, with about eight days between emptyings for one cat, but it needs a Carpet Tray add-on on carpet.
Those reviews include 782 one-star ratings, and the low-rated ones repeat: Wi-Fi disconnects, drawer-full alerts with almost nothing in it, pinch errors, dirty sensors stalling cycles, and units that stop cycling after a year or more. A Trustpilot reviewer whose replacement unit kept failing said they paid $1,000 with financing. At $699 it sits only $100 below the Litter-Robot 5, which is why we would buy it only discounted or reconditioned.
Upside
- Long track record, 13,585 on-site reviews
- Reconditioned units from $664
Downside
- Recurring reports of Wi-Fi drops and false drawer-full alerts
- Needs a Carpet Tray add-on for carpet
The numbers
- Cats up to 4, 3-25 lbs
- Footprint 22 x 27 inches, 29.5 inches tall
- Drawer about 8 days for one cat
- Weight 24 lbs empty

Litter-Robot 5 LitterHopper
$129 Fits the Litter-Robot 5 and 5 Pro; ships separately.
An add-on that tops up litter automatically, the last regular chore a Litter-Robot leaves you.
Even a self-cleaning box needs fresh litter added as clumps are removed. The LitterHopper does that for the Litter-Robot 5 and 5 Pro, holding up to 17.3 cups and refilling when levels drop. Whisker says it works with clay and silica litters among others and needs no separate onboarding.
At $129 it is the accessory we would add first, because a correct litter level also helps the robot clump and cycle properly, a frequent source of complaints. Note the warranty quirk Whisker spells out: the LitterHopper has its own 1-year warranty and is not covered by the 3-year extended warranty, even if you buy that for the robot. Reviews are few, 18 to 22 per color on the Litter-Robot 5 page, but strongly positive.
Upside
- Holds 17.3 cups of litter
- Keeps litter at the level the robot needs
Downside
- Excluded from the 3-year extended warranty
The numbers
- Capacity 17.3 cups
- Fits Litter-Robot 5 and 5 Pro
- Warranty 1 year

Feeder-Robot
$299 Base unit. A 3-year warranty extension is $49.
Whisker’s app-controlled pet feeder, held back by a long record of jams and connection faults.
The Feeder-Robot holds up to 32 cups of dry food, dispenses scheduled portions, works offline and suits cats or dogs. It is 15 inches tall on a 9 by 11.25 inch footprint and assembled in the US.
We pass because the reviews worry us more than for any other Whisker product. It averages 4.3 from 394 on-site reviews, and the low ones are consistent: chute-full errors and jams, motor and sensor faults, Wi-Fi drops, and feeders that stopped dispensing while owners were away, which is exactly when a feeder matters. Some owners describe slow support replies. One reviewer said a gravity feeder from a pet store does the same job for far less, and for travel we would want something simpler.
Upside
- Holds up to 32 cups of dry food
- Keeps feeding on schedule offline
Downside
- Many reports of jams and sensor faults
- Reviewers say it failed while they were away
The numbers
- Capacity up to 32 cups dry food
- Size 15 inches tall, 9 x 11.25 inch footprint
- Pets cats or dogs

Reading the one-star reviews
Trustpilot rates Whisker 3.3 out of 5, “Average”. Happy owners call the Litter-Robot life-changing, praise quiet cycles and odor control, and several describe warranty parts such as globe liners shipped quickly. Whisker replies to most reviews, positive or negative.
The complaints are about reliability once the novelty fades. On Whisker’s own site, the Litter-Robot 4 carries 782 one-star reviews among 13,585, mostly about Wi-Fi drops, false drawer-full alerts and units that stop cycling, and some Litter-Robot 5 Pro buyers say the upgrade brought new sensor and connection problems. Feeder-Robot reviews describe jams and missed meals. On Trustpilot, an owner said a replacement LR4 still failed, another regretted paying a subscription for Pro camera features, and furniture buyers hit the no-returns-on-opened-boxes rule.

A 90-day in-home trial, US assembly and a 4.7 rating on the Litter-Robot 5 earn high marks, offset by steep prices, recurring sensor and Wi-Fi complaints and costly return shipping.
Rivals worth a look
- Furbo. Choose it instead if what you actually want is to watch and reward your pet while you are out, not automate the litter box.
- A standard litter box. Choose it instead if your cat is over 30 pounds or skittish, or if $599 or more for scooping is hard to justify.
Things people ask
Is the Litter-Robot worth it?
For multi-cat homes and owners who hate scooping, many reviewers say yes, and the 90-day trial lets you find out. Budget beyond the sticker, though: Whisker+ insights are optional extras, a 3-year warranty extension costs up to $149, and returning the robot costs you return shipping or a $60 label deduction. Reliability complaints about the Litter-Robot 4 are common enough to factor in.
What does returning a Litter-Robot cost?
Whisker refunds the purchase price within 90 days of receipt, but you pay return shipping. It will provide a FedEx label for a $60 deduction from your refund, and a unit returned with litter or waste may incur a $75 cleaning fee. You need an RMA number first; items sent without one are disposed of without a refund.
Litter-Robot 4 or Litter-Robot 5?
The 5, unless the 4 is discounted. For $100 more, the Litter-Robot 5 takes cats up to 30 pounds instead of 25, supports five cats instead of four, adds WasteID and lasts about 10 days between drawer emptyings for one cat versus 8. It also works on carpet without the add-on tray the 4 needs.
Do I need Whisker+?
No. The free Whisker app tracks weights, visits and cycles with a 7-day history. Whisker+ costs $7.99 a month after a 30-day trial, or $79.90 a year, and adds daily reports, long-term trends and camera features on the 5 Pro. The 5 Pro includes a year of it, and most bundles include six months.
