PetSafe Review: The Smart Buys (and What to Skip)

PetSafe’s best value is its cheapest hit, the $22.99 Easy Walk harness. The pricier self-cleaning litter boxes and smart gadgets are where a one-year warranty and a 45-day return clock start to matter.

We may earn a commission if you buy through our links, once we join a brand's program. It never changes a call. How that works.

Any time a deal stacks: PetSafe’s deals page lists free shipping on harnesses, 35% off a first litter Autoship order and 10% for joining its email list. Orders over $49 ship free anyway.

PetSafe is the consumer label of Radio Systems Corporation, which also sells under the SportDOG, Invisible Fence and Innotek names. Its own US store runs from a $22.99 no-pull harness to a $549.99 app-connected litter box, with fences, fountains, feeders, pet doors and training collars in between.

The pattern across the range is easy to spot. The cheap, mechanical products are the ones owners keep rebuying, and the expensive motorized ones collect the angriest reviews. Everything shares the same one-year limited warranty, and petsafe.com orders get 45 days to return, without the shipping refunded. Our short advice: buy the Easy Walk without overthinking it, treat crystal litter trays as a subscription you are signing up for, and keep the receipt for anything with a motor.

The lineup, model by model

01Smart buyBest for: Dogs that pull on walks

Easy Walk Harness, No Pull Dog Harness

$22.99 Same price in all eight sizes and every color; harnesses currently ship free.

A front-clip no-pull harness PetSafe has sold since 2004, at one low price in every size.

The Easy Walk clips the leash at the chest, not the back. When the dog lunges, a martingale loop on the front tightens across the shoulders and swings the dog sideways, which is the whole trick. PetSafe says a veterinary behaviorist designed it in 2004, and the belly strap is a different color so you can tell which way round it goes.

Sizing is the decision that matters. The chart runs from Petite to Extra Large by girth and chest width, and PetSafe says to size up if your dog falls between two. The one-star reviews fall into two piles: dogs that chewed through the nylon within days, and dogs that slipped a front leg out. One longtime owner says new harnesses tear faster than one bought 12 years ago. PetSafe’s warranty page offers a one-time replacement of chewed nylon products for a nominal chew fee.

Good

  • $22.99 in every size and color
  • Leash clips at the chest, keeping pressure off the throat
  • One-time chew replacement for a nominal fee

Not so good

  • Determined chewers get through the thin nylon straps quickly
  • Some dogs manage to step a leg out of it

Specs we checked

  • Sizes eight, Petite to Extra Large
  • Medium fits 22-32 in girth, about 25-50 lb
  • Leash point front chest martingale loop
  • Colors nine, from Black/Tan to Teal

Self-Cleaning Litter Box - ScoopFree Crystal Plus

$199.99 Refill trays cost $44.99 for a 2-pack; each lasts up to 30 days with one cat.

PetSafe’s simplest self-cleaning box: a rake pushes waste into a covered end of a disposable crystal-litter tray you replace monthly.

Shortly after the cat leaves, a rake drags waste into a covered trough at one end of a disposable tray of crystal litter, which soaks up urine and dries out solids. A light on the box tells you when to swap the tray, which PetSafe says can be up to 30 days. The product page is plain that it works only with official ScoopFree disposable or reusable trays.

That is where the real price hides. At $44.99 for two trays, one cat costs roughly the price of the box again within nine months. Low-rated reviews add detail: one owner says the new model reads RFID tags that only the disposable trays carry, others report a sour smell after a week, a rake that sticks, and a pan too shallow for big cats. Owners of the older model are the harshest critics.

Good

  • No scooping, no litter top-ups, no rotating drum
  • Half the price of the app-connected SmartSpin

Not so good

  • Locked into ScoopFree trays at $44.99 per two-pack
  • Shallow pan; large cats can miss the edge

Specs we checked

  • Footprint 28.2 x 20.4 x 6.6 inches
  • Litter ScoopFree crystal trays only
  • Tray life up to 30 days
  • Hood not included

03Good buyBest for: Multi-pet homes

Drinkwell Platinum Pet Fountain

$55.99

A 168-ounce fountain with a snap-on refill tank and a free-falling stream, fairly priced for its capacity.

The Platinum holds 168 ounces, much of it in a clip-on rear reservoir that tops up the bowl as pets drink, so it suits a house with several animals or one big dog. The stream free-falls into the bowl and the flow is adjustable for timid drinkers. A foam pre-filter and a carbon filter catch hair and odors, and everything except the pump can go on the top rack of the dishwasher.

The complaint that repeats across years of one-star reviews is flooding: owners describe the reservoir emptying onto the floor once the filter clogs or the valve stops sealing, sometimes after a few months. Pump failures come up too. Clean the pre-filter often, and know that a replacement pump bought on its own carries only a 90-day warranty.

Good

  • 168 oz capacity means fewer refills
  • Dishwasher-safe parts, pump excepted
  • Adjustable flow for cautious pets

Not so good

  • Recurring reports of the reservoir flooding the floor
  • Replacement pumps carry just 90 days of coverage

Specs we checked

  • Capacity 168 oz
  • Size 15.8 x 10.3 x 10.0 inches
  • Filters foam pre-filter plus carbon
  • Power plug-in

Smart Feed Automatic Dog and Cat Feeder, 2nd Generation

$134.99

A Wi-Fi feeder with a 24-cup hopper and app scheduling, let down by reports of silent failures.

Smart Feed holds 24 cups of dry or semi-moist food and serves up to 12 meals a day, from 1/8 cup to 4 cups each, scheduled in the My PetSafe app. A Slow Feed setting spreads a meal over 15 minutes for gulpers, sensors warn when the hopper runs low, and the bowl, lid and hopper go in the dishwasher. PetSafe pitches it at cats and small to medium dogs.

The one-star reviews are the reason to wait for a lower price. Several describe Wi-Fi dropouts that no reset fixed, a jammed conveyor or a snapped plastic gear, and larger kibble that will not climb the conveyor at all. The most alarming says that after a power cut the feeder sat in an error state while the app kept reporting meals as served. If you travel, have someone check the bowl.

Good

  • Up to 12 meals a day, from 1/8 cup to 4 cups
  • Dishwasher-safe bowl, lid and hopper

Not so good

  • Reports of Wi-Fi dropouts and jammed conveyors
  • One owner says the app logged meals the feeder never served

Specs we checked

  • Hopper 24 cups
  • Meals up to 12 a day, 1/8 to 4 cups
  • Size 20.3 x 9.4 x 12.6 inches
  • Power plug-in

Stay & Play Wireless Fence with Replaceable Battery Collar

$249.99

A no-dig circular boundary of up to 3/4 acre that packs up and travels, if a circle suits your yard.

An indoor transmitter sets a round boundary from 5 to 105 feet in every direction, up to about 3/4 acre. Near the edge the receiver collar beeps, then delivers one of five static levels, or tone only if you choose. Setup takes an hour or two, nothing is buried, and the transmitter can ride along in an RV as long as it stays indoors and plugged in. PetSafe says it is not for dogs under six months old.

The boundary is always a circle and cannot be reshaped, so long, narrow lots waste coverage. Low-rated reviews describe the edge drifting by 10 to 20 feet, corrections firing while the dog was well inside, and collar plastic cracking soon after the one-year warranty ran out. Each extra collar is a separate purchase.

Good

  • No digging; sets up in one to two hours
  • Portable, and works with unlimited extra collars

Not so good

  • Circle only, so odd-shaped yards get gaps or wasted coverage
  • Reports of corrections firing inside the boundary

Specs we checked

  • Boundary circular, 5-105 ft radius, up to 3/4 acre
  • Correction tone only or 5 static levels
  • Collar fits 6-28 in necks
  • Collar battery RFA-67, about 1-2 months

Smart Cat Litter Box - ScoopFree SmartSpin Self-Cleaning

$399.99 White or black, same price.

A rotating, app-connected box that takes ordinary clumping litter, and the most complained-about PetSafe product we read.

SmartSpin sifts clumps into a sealed, deodorized 6-liter drawer after the cat leaves, accepts the clumping litter you already buy, sits 12 inches off the floor and logs weight and visits in the PetSafe Pet Companion app over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. On paper it solves the Crystal Plus tray problem.

In practice its reviews are the weakest of any pick here: close to one rating in five on PetSafe’s own page is a single star. The recent ones echo each other, with sensor errors that stop cycles, gears that catch mid-spin, and a soft inner liner that warps within a year or two. Two owners say PetSafe would not sell or replace the warped liner on its own. Support can be generous, as one Trustpilot reviewer found, but at $399.99 you should not need it.

Good

  • Uses ordinary clumping litter, no proprietary trays
  • App tracks weight and litter box visits

Not so good

  • Recurring sensor errors, stalled cycles and warped liners
  • Owners report the liner is not sold separately

Specs we checked

  • Litter any clumping litter
  • Waste drawer 6 liters
  • Entry height 12 inches
  • Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz, Pet Companion app

The review pile, summarized

PetSafe’s own product pages carry Bazaarvoice reviews, and they show the split plainly. The Easy Walk harness averaged about 4.2 out of 5 across 540 reviews when we read it, and the Crystal Plus about 4.1. The SmartSpin sat near 3.7, with 59 one-star ratings out of 323, and the Drinkwell Platinum near 3.8.

Trustpilot has two PetSafe profiles. The petsafe.net one rated 2.1 out of 5 from 233 reviews, dominated by GPS fence collars that lost connection, motors that failed around the one-year mark, and a ScoopFree owner offered $50 off a replacement once the warranty lapsed. The petsafe.com profile has just six reviews, mostly UK cat-flap owners praising quick replacements. On its own site PetSafe answers many low ratings publicly with its phone line and chat hours, and fast warranty swaps earn praise on both platforms.

Where the 3.4 comes from

PartScoreWeight
Product3.535%
Value3.830%

Buying experience3.315%
Smart Score3.4/5

Cheap basics like the Easy Walk earn their reputation, but motorized litter boxes and feeders draw repeat failure reports, and a one-year warranty plus a 45-day return window leaves little cushion.

Other brands to check

  • Ruffwear. Choose it instead if your dog needs a padded harness for long hikes rather than a cheap no-pull fix.
  • Halo Collar. Choose it instead if you want a GPS boundary drawn to your actual yard instead of a fixed circle.

FAQ

Can I return a PetSafe product bought on Amazon or at a pet store?

Not to PetSafe. Its returns page says purchases from other retailers follow that retailer’s return policy. The warranty still applies if the seller was an authorized PetSafe reseller and you can show proof of purchase, so keep the receipt or order email. PetSafe asks owners to register within 30 days of delivery, though it says skipping registration does not void coverage.

How much do ScoopFree crystal trays cost to run?

The disposable trays, each with a pre-portioned 4.3-pound bag of crystal litter, list at $44.99 for two, $79.99 for four and $109.99 for six. PetSafe says one tray can last up to 30 days with one cat, so a single cat runs roughly $18 to $23 a month before discounts. The deals page offers 35% off a first litter Autoship order and 5% off later ones.

What does the PetSafe warranty actually cover?

Defects in material or workmanship for one year from delivery, for the original buyer only, on products bought new from an authorized seller. PetSafe replaces faulty parts with new or refurbished ones; labor is not covered. Damage caused by the animal is excluded, which matters for chewed collars. Certified refurbished products get 90 days, and fountain pumps bought separately get 90 days too.

Is returning to PetSafe free?

No. Within 45 days you can return an item bought on petsafe.com for a refund of the purchase price, but you prepay the return shipping and the original shipping charge is not refunded. The item must be resellable and in its original packaging, so keep the box until you are sure. Toys that have been in a dog’s mouth and clearance items cannot be returned.
