Uniqlo Review 2026: Best Basics to Buy
Uniqlo’s $14.90 HEATTECH layer is the best value in the store, and its pricier warmth upgrades mostly are not. Here is what to buy, what to skip, and the returns rule that catches online shoppers.
We may earn a commission if you buy through our links, once we join a brand's program. It never changes a call. How that works.
- Skip the upgrade
- Skip HEATTECH Ultra Warm at $34.90 unless you face real cold. The standard $14.90 layer earns 4.7 stars, and two fit under a sweater.
- Best time to buy
- When an item shows a limited-time price. In October the women’s Crew Neck T-Shirt dropped to $7.90 in some colors, and the site runs a standing sale section.

Uniqlo sells technical basics with Japanese names and American price tags that rarely move far. Most of its catalog sits between $15 and $100, and the product pages publish thousands of customer reviews, which makes it one of the easiest chains to research before buying.
The best buys are the cheapest ones. The $14.90 HEATTECH layer and the $24.90 AIRism cotton tee are what Uniqlo does better than anyone at the price. The upgrades are where to slow down: the cashmere-blend HEATTECH is 9% cashmere, and the 100% cashmere sweater draws pilling complaints. Know the returns rule before you order online, because Uniqlo’s own product pages say returns of online orders are online only, with a shipping fee.
The 7 we looked at
HEATTECH T-Shirt
$14.90 Men’s long-sleeve crew neck, sizes XS to 3XL, read in October.
Uniqlo’s thin thermal long-sleeve crew, the item most people mean when they say they buy Uniqlo for winter.
HEATTECH is a thin, stretchy synthetic knit that Uniqlo says absorbs and releases moisture, with odor control and fibers infused with plant-based oil for a smooth feel. The men’s long-sleeve crew is 40% polyester, 32% acrylic, 21% rayon and 7% spandex, machine-washable on a cold gentle cycle. Sizes run XS to 3XL, and the 209 reviews average 4.7.
It is thin by design, and that is where the complaints sit. A few low-rated reviews call it paper-thin, one owner said several shirts developed holes within three months, another had two rip before the first wear, and a tall buyer found the sleeves two inches short. Treat it as a cheap layer you replace every few winters, not an heirloom.
Good
- 4.7 average from more than 200 reviews
- Cheapest warm layer in the range at $14.90
- Sizes up to 3XL
Not so good
- Thin fabric; some reports of holes within months
- Sleeves run short on taller buyers
Specs we checked
- Fabric 40% polyester, 32% acrylic, 21% rayon, 7% spandex
- Sleeve long
- Care machine wash cold, gentle
- Sizes XS to 3XL

AIRism Cotton Oversized T-Shirt | Half-Sleeve
$24.90 Unisex, sizes XXS to 3XL, one price for all colors.
Uniqlo’s most-reviewed tee: a boxy half-sleeve cut with a cotton face and a smooth polyester side.
The AIRism Cotton tee is a unisex oversized cut with longer half sleeves, in a 53% cotton, 47% polyester fabric. It has close to 4,900 reviews averaging 4.8, more than any other item we checked on the site, and a fit score that sits almost exactly on true to size.
The lowest-rated reviews are a short list of repeats. Some long-time buyers say the fabric is thinner than it was two years ago; one reports shrinking a full size in length despite cold washes; another objects that a shirt sold as cotton is nearly half polyester; and a few think the cut is too long. One reviewer asked Uniqlo to bring the price back to $14.90, which hints at how much it has risen. Hang it to dry.
Good
- 4.8 average from nearly 4,900 reviews
- Boxy cut with half sleeves that layers well
- Sizes XXS to 3XL
Not so good
- Nearly half polyester despite the cotton name
- Some reports of shrinkage in length
Specs we checked
- Fabric 53% cotton, 47% polyester
- Fit oversized, half-sleeve
- Sizes XXS to 3XL

Barrel Jeans
$49.90 Unisex, waist sizes 22 to 34 inches; free cut-off or lock-stitch hemming online.
A slightly high-rise, curved-leg jean in cotton and lyocell, with free online hemming that changes the returns math.
Uniqlo’s Barrel Jeans curve out through the sides of the leg and taper at the hem, with a slightly high rise and a loose fit. The blue washes are 79% cotton and 21% lyocell, and the page warns that the jeans may ship in one of several fabric versions you cannot choose between. With 584 reviews averaging 4.7, they are the best-rated jean we found on the site.
Sizing is the problem. One-star reviews describe waists two to five inches off the size chart in both directions, and several buyers who used the free online hemming say they then could not return the altered pair. Others report shrinkage or holes after one wash. Order unhemmed first, confirm the waist, then reorder with the hem.
Good
- 4.7 average from nearly 600 reviews
- Free cut-off or lock-stitch hemming on items over $20
Not so good
- Waist sizing inconsistent with the chart, per many reviews
- Reviewers say hemmed pairs could not be returned
Specs we checked
- Fabric, blue washes 79% cotton, 21% lyocell
- Fit slightly high rise, loose, tapered barrel leg
- Waist sizes 22 to 34 inches

PUFFTECH Jacket | 2025 Version
$59.90 Men’s, sizes S to XL, read in October.
A light synthetic-fill puffer with a water-repellent finish, priced well below most branded puffers.
PUFFTECH is Uniqlo’s synthetic insulation: the men’s jacket has a 100% nylon face and back with 100% polyester filling, plus a water-repellent finish for light rain. Uniqlo pitches it for cool weather and layering rather than deep winter, and the 55 reviews average 4.4. It hand-washes cold, which suits anyone who would rather not take a down jacket to the cleaner.
The low-rated reviews flag two issues. Zippers come up repeatedly, including one parent whose two jackets each broke within a month, and some buyers say it runs short and small. One owner also noted a $7 return fee for sending back a jacket that did not fit. Check the size chart’s body length, and size up if you plan to layer.
Good
- Synthetic fill you can hand-wash at home
- Water-repellent finish sheds light rain
Not so good
- Recurring zipper failures in low-rated reviews
- Runs short and small for some buyers
Specs we checked
- Shell 100% nylon
- Fill 100% polyester
- Finish water-repellent
- Sizes S to XL

Fleece Full-Zip Jacket
$49.90 Unisex, sizes XXS to 3XL, read in October.
A plain recycled-polyester full-zip fleece that layers under a shell and goes in the washing machine.
This is the basic Uniqlo fleece: 100% polyester, mostly or entirely recycled depending on the color, with a full zip and machine-wash care, ideally inside out in a mesh bag. Sizes run XXS to 3XL, and more than 300 reviews average 4.6.
The complaints focus on a redesign. Several reviewers say the current raglan-sleeve version bunches fabric under the arms and runs bigger through the shoulders than the older set-in sleeve cut, and one noticed the price rise by $10. Uniqlo’s own review summary adds that it collects lint and lets wind through. Wear it as a layer, not as a jacket for windy days.
Good
- 4.6 average from more than 300 reviews
- Recycled polyester and machine-washable
Not so good
- Raglan sleeves bunch under the arms for some wearers
- Not windproof, and it attracts lint
Specs we checked
- Fabric 100% polyester, recycled fiber
- Closure full zip
- Sizes XXS to 3XL

Cashmere Sweater
$99.90 Men’s crew neck, sizes XS to 3XL; no promotion when we read it.
A 100% cashmere crewneck at under $100, with a pilling record that argues for paying less.
Uniqlo’s men’s Cashmere Sweater is 100% cashmere, hand-wash cold or dry clean, in sizes XS to 3XL. At $99.90 it undercuts most pure-cashmere crewnecks, and 227 reviews average 4.5.
The lowest-rated reviews are consistent, and Uniqlo’s own review summary admits that pilling and snagging may occur. Owners describe pilling within a week, holes after two wears, itchiness against bare skin, and a sweater that shrank two sizes on a cold delicate cycle. Several also complain that a washed or worn sweater could not be returned. Buy it when a limited-time price brings it down, hand-wash it, and wear a layer underneath.
Good
- Pure cashmere under $100
- Wide size range, XS to 3XL
Not so good
- Pilling and holes reported after very little wear
- Shrinks badly if machine washed
Specs we checked
- Fabric 100% cashmere
- Care hand wash cold or dry clean
- Sizes XS to 3XL

HEATTECH Extra Warm Cashmere Blend T-Shirt
$29.90 Men’s long-sleeve crew; twice the price of standard HEATTECH.
The step-up thermal layer, with a cashmere headline and a label that shows 9%.
Extra Warm is the middle of Uniqlo’s three HEATTECH grades, between the $14.90 standard layer and the $34.90 Ultra Warm. The men’s version is 57% acrylic, 28% rayon, 9% cashmere and 6% spandex, machine-washable on a gentle cycle, and its 97 reviews average 4.5.
We pass because the low-rated reviews hit exactly the reason to pay double. Buyers call it very thin and see-through, and two describe tears after one or two washes even in a mesh bag. One long-time fan says the line has gone downhill. For most people, two standard HEATTECH layers cost the same and give more flexibility.
Good
- Softer hand than the standard layer
- Sizes XS to 3XL
Not so good
- Only 9% cashmere at twice the price
- Reports of thin fabric tearing early
Specs we checked
- Fabric 57% acrylic, 28% rayon, 9% cashmere, 6% spandex
- Care machine wash cold, gentle
- Sizes XS to 3XL

Reading the one-star reviews
Uniqlo’s product pages are packed with reviews and they are mostly happy: the picks here average 4.4 to 4.8, often from hundreds or thousands of owners. Trustpilot rates Uniqlo 1.7 out of 5, “Bad”, on a profile that mixes US, UK and Asian buyers.
Two complaints run through both places. The first is the online returns rule: shoppers are surprised that online orders cannot be returned in a store, and several on Uniqlo’s own pages paid a return fee for a size mistake. The second is quality drift, with long-time customers saying tees, HEATTECH and cashmere feel thinner than they used to.
Uniqlo now shows an AI-written review summary on each product page, and to its credit the summaries mention the weak points, such as pilling on the cashmere and zippers on the PUFFTECH jacket.

Quick questions
Can I return a Uniqlo online order in a store?
No. Uniqlo’s US product pages say exchanges can happen online or at any Uniqlo store, but returns of online orders are online only. Everything must be returned within 30 days of the shipping date, and a return shipping fee applies unless Uniqlo sent the wrong item. If you are unsure of a size, in-store pickup avoids shipping costs and lets you try it on before leaving.
Is HEATTECH Ultra Warm worth it over regular HEATTECH?
Only for real cold. Standard HEATTECH costs $14.90, Extra Warm $29.90 and Ultra Warm $34.90 for the men’s long-sleeve crew. The standard layer has the best value and a 4.7 average. Low-rated reviews of the cashmere-blend Extra Warm complain that it is thin, so test one standard layer under a sweater before paying more than double.
Does Uniqlo hem pants for free?
Online, often yes. Uniqlo’s alterations page lists free cut-off and lock-stitch hemming for pants over $20, and $5 for items under $20; blind and chain stitches cost $5 or $10. Be careful with jeans whose fit you have not confirmed: several reviewers say an altered pair could not be returned, so check the waist first.
How much is Uniqlo shipping?
Standard shipping is $7.99, according to the product pages, and it is free on orders over $99 or when you pick up in a store. That threshold is higher than at Gap, where free Encore members ship free from $50, so batch orders or use pickup if a store is near.
