Gap Review 2026: Which Basics Are Worth the Money
Gap’s list prices are mostly fiction: in late October a sitewide 50%-off promotion covered even sale items. Here is which hoodie, jeans and khakis earn a cart slot, and which upgrade to leave on the rack.
We may earn a commission if you buy through our links, once we join a brand's program. It never changes a call. How that works.
- Skip the upgrade
- Skip the Extra Heavyweight French Terry Hoodie at full price. It lists at $98 or more, against $49.95 to $98 for the VintageSoft hoodie that owners rate just as highly.
- Best time to buy
- During one of Gap’s stacked promotions. In late October the homepage ran 50% off your purchase, including sale items, and Encore members get free shipping on $50 or more.

Gap sells the American wardrobe staples it has sold for decades: logo hoodies, five-pocket jeans, khakis, crewneck sweaters. Most adult pieces list between $50 and $100, and almost nobody should pay that. When we read the site in late October, a 50%-off promotion applied at checkout to nearly everything, including items already marked down.
The smart move is to join the free Encore program before you buy. Members get free returns by mail and free shipping on $50 or more; guests pay $7.50 to ship and $6 to send things back. Buy the VintageSoft hoodie and one of the two well-rated jean fits, and check the fabric label before trusting a product name. The CashSoft sweater, for one, contains no cashmere at all.
The lineup, model by model
Adult VintageSoft Arch Logo Hoodie
from $49.95 List price varies by color, up to $98 for special editions; late October’s 50%-off promotion applied.
The arch-logo pullover Gap has sold for years, and the item where its discounts buy the most.
This is the hoodie most people picture when they think of Gap: a 77% cotton, 23% polyester fleece with a brushed inside, a double-layered hood, a kangaroo pocket and the arch logo stitched on as a twill appliqué. It is sold as an adult unisex fit, with tall sizes alongside regular ones.
Owners love it. The product page shows a 4.8 average from more than 3,100 reviews, and five-star ratings outnumber everything else by a wide margin. The one-star pile is small and points in a few directions: shrinkage after a machine wash, sleeves that run tight on an otherwise normal fit, a buyer who found it thinner than older versions, and several orders that never arrived. Wash it cold and skip the dryer if you are between sizes.
Good
- 4.8 average from more than 3,100 owner reviews
- Brushed fleece and double-layered hood at a sale price under most rivals
- Tall sizes as well as regular
Not so good
- Some owners report shrinkage and tight sleeves
- The logo is large and stitched on, not subtle
The numbers
- Fabric 77% cotton, 23% polyester
- Lining brushed fleece
- Hood double-layered with drawcords
- Pocket front kangaroo pocket

High Rise Stride Wide-Leg Jeans
from $89.95 List $89.95 to $99.95 by wash; late-October promotional prices started at $35.
Gap’s best-reviewed women’s jean, a relaxed wide leg that Gap itself says runs loose.
Stride is fitted at the waist and hips and then falls into a full-length relaxed wide leg. The dark rinse we read specs for is 99% cotton with 1% stretch, rated low stretch, and it comes in regular, petite and tall sizes with short, regular and long inseams, plus a Curvy version. With more than 3,500 reviews averaging 4.5, it is the most-reviewed women’s jean we found on the site.
Read the fit note before ordering: Gap says to size down for a slimmer fit, and “too big” is the most common one-star complaint. Other low-rated reviews mention a short inseam that measured like a regular, a black wash that bled dye in the first load, and one pair that sagged within two hours of wear. Wash dark colors alone the first time.
Good
- 4.5 average from more than 3,500 reviews
- Petite, tall and Curvy versions, three inseams
- Mostly cotton, so it looks like real denim
Not so good
- Runs large; Gap itself recommends sizing down
- Reports of dark washes bleeding dye
The numbers
- Fabric, dark rinse 99% cotton, 1% stretch
- Rise high
- Stretch low
- Leg full-length relaxed wide leg

Straight Jeans
from $69.95 List $69.95 to $79.95 by wash; late-October sale prices dipped well under half of that.
Gap’s mainstream men’s jean, slim through the thigh with a straight leg and a little stretch.
Gap’s men’s Straight Jeans sit in the middle of its fit range: slim through the hip and thigh, straight below the knee, with five pockets and a zip fly. The black version we read is 99% cotton and 1% stretch, and Gap promises it looks lived-in without stretching out. Some washes use GapFlex denim with medium stretch. The rating is strong, 4.6 from more than 1,700 reviews.
The complaints are about consistency, not comfort. Several one-star reviewers say two washes in the same size fit a full size apart, and one measured a pair labeled 33 that came out at 30. Others report rear pockets wearing through within six months and wrong items in the box. If one wash fits you, buy that wash again rather than assuming the size carries over.
Good
- 4.6 average from more than 1,700 reviews
- Middle-of-the-road fit that suits most builds
Not so good
- Sizing can vary from wash to wash
- A few reports of pocket seams wearing through within months
The numbers
- Fabric, black wash 99% cotton, 1% stretch
- Fit slim hip and thigh, straight leg
- Details zip fly, five pockets

Modern Straight Khakis
$59.95 One list price for every color; late-October markdowns and promotions cut it by half or more.
The everyday khaki, in stretch twill with a stretch waistband, priced like a commodity once a sale hits.
Gap’s khakis are a stretch twill weave, 98% cotton and 2% elastane, with a stretch waistband, button closure, slanted front pockets and button-welt back pockets. The Modern Straight cut is the middle option between Gap’s slim and relaxed khakis. More than 2,000 reviews average 4.7.
The lowest-rated reviews tell a story about change. Long-time buyers say recent pairs feel thinner or more synthetic than the ones they bought a year earlier, wrinkle badly out of the wash and fit differently, with one inseam running an inch long. Another buyer had streaks appear on three pairs after a single wash. If you own an older pair you like, compare it against a new one inside the 30-day window.
Good
- 4.7 average from more than 2,000 reviews
- Stretch waistband and stretch twill for all-day comfort
Not so good
- Repeat buyers say the fabric has become thinner and wrinkles more
- Some fit and inseam inconsistency between orders
The numbers
- Fabric 98% cotton, 2% elastane
- Weave stretch twill
- Waist stretch waistband, button closure

Adult Extra Heavyweight French Terry Hoodie
from $98 List $98 to $148 by color; late-October prices started at $49.
A 650-gram French terry hoodie cut oversized, Gap’s premium sweatshirt and priced like one.
This is Gap’s answer to the heavyweight streetwear hoodie: 650-gram French terry, 82% cotton and 18% recycled polyester, in an oversized fit with a kangaroo pocket and drawcords. The 54 reviews average 4.8, and the happy ones keep comparing it to a weighted blanket.
The issue is price, not quality. At list it costs about double the VintageSoft hoodie, so it only makes sense at half off. The low-rated reviews are few but specific: one buyer was sent a random crewneck instead, and repeat buyers note the design changed from last year’s version, which had no drawcords and a shorter body. One tall reviewer also found the hood big enough to cover his entire face. Size down if you do not want it boxy.
Good
- Very heavy 650-gram French terry
- 4.8 average, with owners praising the weight
Not so good
- Costs about twice the VintageSoft hoodie at list price
- Oversized cut and a very large hood
The numbers
- Fabric weight 650 g French terry
- Fabric 82% cotton, 18% recycled polyester
- Fit oversized

CashSoft Crew Sweater
from $69.95 List $69.95 to $89.95 by color; late-October promotional prices ran $34 to $71.
A soft men’s crewneck whose name suggests cashmere and whose label says cotton, nylon and acrylic.
CashSoft is Gap’s name for a soft knit, and it is not cashmere. The crew sweater’s fabric label reads 53% cotton, 24% nylon and 23% acrylic, with a plain crewneck and ribbed cuffs and hem. The style is newly listed and had only five reviews when we read it, all five-star and all from October, praising the softness and the compliments.
We pass for value reasons. At $69.95 to $89.95 list you are paying wool-sweater money for a blend that is nearly half synthetic, and with five reviews there is no record yet of how it pills or holds shape after a winter of washing. Acrylic-heavy knits often pill, so treat the early praise as provisional. If you want the softness, wait for a 50%-off event and buy one color, not three.
Good
- Very soft hand, per every early review
- Classic crewneck that layers under a jacket
Not so good
- No cashmere: nearly half the fiber is nylon and acrylic
- Too new for any long-term durability record
The numbers
- Fabric 53% cotton, 24% nylon, 23% acrylic
- Neckline crewneck
- Trim ribbed cuffs and hem

The review pile, summarized
There are two Gaps in the reviews. On product pages the core basics score between 4.5 and 4.8 from thousands of owners, and the complaints are about fit and fabric. On Trustpilot, Gap is rated 1.4 out of 5, “Bad”, and almost none of it is about clothing.
The Trustpilot pile is about getting the order at all: parcels marked delivered that never came, orders cancelled without warning after a fraud flag, backorders that appeared days after checkout, and long phone calls that ended without a refund. Several recent reviewers blame Gap’s choice of carriers. The same theme shows up among the one-star reviews on Gap’s own pages, where buyers rate a pair of jeans they never received.
One detail worth knowing: a number of Gap’s on-site reviews carry a #sweepstakes tag, so some five-star ratings were written for a prize entry. Read the text, and sort by lowest rating before you order.

Quick questions
Are Gap returns free?
Only if you are an Encore member. Gap charges non-members a $6 fee to return by mail, while members, who join for free, return by mail at no charge. Exchanges are free for everyone, and in-store returns avoid the fee. Items must be unwashed and unworn, returned within 30 days of delivery, and final-sale and Encore Market items cannot come back at all.
Does Gap give a price adjustment if something goes on sale?
Yes, once per item, within 14 days of your order date, by contacting customer service. The catch is that items bought with a promotion code or another discount do not qualify, apart from a free-shipping discount, and final-sale items are excluded. Online orders cannot be adjusted in a store. In practice the adjustment helps most when you paid full price.
Is Gap’s CashSoft made of cashmere?
No. CashSoft is a name for a soft knit. The CashSoft Crew Sweater we read is 53% cotton, 24% nylon and 23% acrylic, with no cashmere listed. That does not make it bad, but it does mean you should compare it with cotton and acrylic sweaters, not with cashmere, when deciding whether the price is fair.
