Samsonite Review: The Smart Buys (and What to Skip)

Samsonite’s smartest buy is a $147 carry-on that actually fits airline sizers. Here is which suitcase to pick, which premium line to skip, and why the November 9 sale deadline matters.

Skip the $500 Proxis carry-on. It has the same 22 x 14 x 9 inch footprint as the Voltage DLX, saves 1.4 pounds, and rates 3.9 against 4.4.

Samsonite sells directly through its US online store as well as through department stores, and its own site runs near-constant markdowns: in late October most core hardside lines showed 30% off a comparable value, and one three-piece set 42%. The ranges climb from polypropylene shells (Freeform, Voltage DLX, Outline Pro) through polycarbonate sets to the premium Proxis.

The value sits at the bottom of that ladder. Every piece we read lists a 10-year limited warranty, so paying more mostly buys lighter weight and a nicer handle, not better coverage. Our advice: measure before you buy, because several of Samsonite’s carry-ons exceed the 22 x 14 x 9 inch size its own reviewers treat as the usual US limit, buy during a sitewide markdown, and keep the box until your first trip, since returns cost $14.99.

What to buy (and what not to)

01Smart buyBest for: Flyers who never check bags

Voltage DLX Global Carry-On Spinner

$209.99 Comparable value. On sale for $146.99 (30% off) until November 9, 2026.

A 22 x 14 x 9 inch polypropylene carry-on with a USB port, sized to fit the common US limit, for under $150 on sale.

The Voltage DLX Global is the carry-on in Samsonite’s range that is actually built around the 22 x 14 x 9 inch size, measured including wheels and handles. It weighs 6.1 pounds, expands by an inch, and has a USB port in the TSA lock panel (bring your own battery), a WetPak pocket and a privacy ID slot. The collection’s reviews average 4.4 out of 5 across more than 4,500 ratings.

The one-star reviews are specific. One buyer measured it at 22 x 13 x 9 inches and felt short-changed, another found the port is USB-A rather than USB-C, and owners of the white version describe cuts and scuffs after one flight. A few report wheels breaking after a handful of trips. Pick a darker color and check the port type before relying on it.

Worth it for

  • Sized to the common 22 x 14 x 9 inch limit
  • Under $150 during the current markdown
  • Built-in USB port and WetPak pocket

Watch out for

  • USB-A port, not USB-C
  • Light colors scuff quickly, per reviewers

Specs we checked

  • Exterior 22 x 14 x 9 inches, wheels included
  • Weight 6.1 lbs
  • Shell 100% polypropylene, expands 1 inch
  • Warranty Limited 10 Year Global

02Good buyBest for: A week-long checked bag

Freeform Medium Spinner

$259.99 Comparable value. On sale for $181.99 (30% off) in October.

Samsonite’s lightweight polypropylene checked bag in the size that stays inside airline limits, unlike its large sibling.

Freeform is Samsonite’s best-selling lightweight line, and the medium is its sensible checked size: 26.5 x 18.5 x 12.5 inches outside, 8.5 pounds, a 1.5-inch expansion, double spinner wheels and a recessed three-dial TSA lock. Reviews across the Freeform family average 4.5 out of 5 from nearly 4,900 ratings.

Why the medium rather than the large? The Freeform Large lists a linear dimension of 63.3 inches, just over the 62 inches many airlines allow before oversize fees. The family’s lowest-rated reviews mention shells severely scratched after a single trip, a handle that bent on first use, a logo plate that cracked away from the shell and a zipper that broke on trip one. Polypropylene flexes rather than cracks, but it does scuff, so expect it to look used quickly.

Worth it for

  • Light for its size at 8.5 pounds
  • Stays under typical checked-bag size limits

Watch out for

  • Shell scratches easily, per several reviewers
  • Isolated reports of handles and zippers failing early

Specs we checked

  • Exterior 26.5 x 18.5 x 12.5 inches
  • Weight 8.5 lbs
  • Expansion 1.5 inches
  • Lock recessed TSA three-dial combination

Pivot 3 3 Piece Set

$519.99 Comparable value. On sale for $299.99 (42% off) in October, the deepest cut we saw.

Three polycarbonate spinners for about $300 on sale, provided you know two of them miss common airline sizes.

The set includes a carry-on, a medium and a large, all polycarbonate with 1.5 inches of expansion, keyless TSA locks, compression straps and an Eazyhook on the handle for a jacket or small bag. Weights run 6.5, 9.2 and 11.6 pounds. Reviews average 4.6 out of 5 from 885 ratings.

Read the dimensions before you buy. The carry-on is 22.5 x 14.5 x 9.5 inches, half an inch over the common limit on every side, and the large has a 64.3-inch linear dimension, above the 62 inches many airlines allow. The lowest-rated reviews say exactly that, with one buyer told the small case could not go in the cabin and another facing extra-bag fees. Others report zippers failing and a handle stuck in the up position on the first flight.

Worth it for

  • Three pieces for about the price of one premium case
  • Polycarbonate shells with 1.5-inch expansion

Watch out for

  • Carry-on and large exceed common airline sizes
  • Zipper and handle failures in low-rated reviews

Specs we checked

  • Carry-on 22.5 x 14.5 x 9.5 inches, 6.5 lbs
  • Medium 26.75 x 17 x 11.75 inches, 9.2 lbs
  • Large 30.75 x 20 x 13.5 inches, 11.6 lbs
  • Shell polycarbonate, expands 1.5 inches

Outline Pro Carry-On Spinner

$219.99 Midnight Blue. Excluded from the 30% sale; 20% off when bought with another Outline Pro piece.

The best-reviewed collection on the site, but this size runs larger than a standard carry-on and is full price.

Outline Pro is the most-reviewed line on Samsonite’s site, averaging 4.7 out of 5 across nearly 10,000 ratings, and this piece shows why buyers like it: a polypropylene shell, a KompressPak divider that compresses one side, a WetPak pocket, a built-in TSA lock with USB port and a 6.4-pound weight.

It is also 23 x 15 x 10 inches, bigger than the 22 x 14 x 9 inch size many airlines list, which is why Samsonite also sells a separate Outline Pro Global Carry-On. The one-star reviews mention heavy scratching after one international trip, an expansion zipper that came off within a week, broken compression clips and long waits with support. At full price, wait for the build-a-set discount or a broader sale.

Worth it for

  • 4.7 rating across the Outline Pro collection
  • Compression divider and WetPak pocket

Watch out for

  • 23 x 15 x 10 inches, over common carry-on limits
  • Not included in the current 30% markdown

Specs we checked

  • Exterior 23 x 15 x 10 inches
  • Weight 6.4 lbs
  • Interior KompressPak divider, WetPak pocket
  • Lock TSA lock with USB port

05PassBest for: Weight-obsessed frequent flyers only

Proxis Global Carry-On Spinner

$500 Silver. Full price; Proxis is excluded from the current sale.

Samsonite’s premium Roxkin carry-on is very light, but it costs three times the Voltage DLX and rates worse.

Proxis uses Samsonite’s Roxkin shell, a multi-layered material the page says bounces back into shape, plus an aluminum telescoping handle, rubber-tired dual spinners, a USB port and a TSA lock. At 4.7 pounds and 22 x 14 x 9 inches, it is the lightest airline-sized case we read on the site.

The reviews do not match the price. The collection averages 3.9 out of 5 from about 130 ratings, and roughly one in six is a single star. Owners describe corner dents on the first international trip, wheels pushed into the shell, a blue case badly scratched after two round trips and a lining that tore on first use. It also expands only half an inch. For $500, a Voltage DLX plus a Freeform Medium leaves change.

Worth it for

  • 4.7 pounds in a 22 x 14 x 9 inch case
  • Aluminum handle and rubber-tired wheels

Watch out for

  • 3.9 rating, with dent and wheel complaints
  • Only 0.5 inch of expansion at a $500 price

Specs we checked

  • Exterior 22 x 14 x 9 inches
  • Weight 4.7 lbs
  • Shell Roxkin, expands 0.5 inch
  • Interior 19 x 13.1 x 8.7 inches

Reading the one-star reviews

Samsonite’s own product reviews are pooled across each collection, so the numbers describe a family rather than one size: Outline Pro averages 4.7 from nearly 10,000 ratings, Pivot 3 4.6, Freeform 4.5, Voltage DLX 4.4 and the premium Proxis 3.9.

The one-star reviews, sorted newest first, repeat four complaints: shells scratched or dented after a single trip, zippers splitting or coming off, handles that jam, and carry-ons that turn out too big for the airline. Several buyers were unhappy that returns and warranty repairs cost them shipping, and one says a set arrived locked with a factory code that did not work. Samsonite’s Trustpilot profile covers Samsonite Europe rather than the US store; it rates 3.7, Average, with many recent reviews praising free replacement wheels and spare parts.

Well-reviewed, widely discounted hardside luggage with a 10-year warranty and 90-day returns, held back by return fees, airline-damage exclusions and steady scuff and zipper complaints.

Things people ask

Does Samsonite’s warranty cover airline damage?

No. The limited warranty covers manufacturing defects in material and workmanship and specifically excludes transport damage by airlines, along with misuse, abrasion and normal wear and tear. Warranty repairs must go through an approved Samsonite service center. If an airline breaks your case, file a claim with the airline before you leave the airport.

Are Samsonite carry-ons airline-size?

Some are and some are not. The Voltage DLX Global and Proxis Global carry-ons come in at 22 x 14 x 9 inches, wheels and handles counted. The Outline Pro Carry-On is 23 x 15 x 10 inches and the Pivot 3 carry-on 22.5 x 14.5 x 9.5 inches. Samsonite’s pages note that allowances vary by airline, so check yours and look for Global in the name.

How much does it cost to return Samsonite luggage?

Unused items can be returned within 90 days of the original ship date. Samsonite deducts $14.99 per order for returning travel items and $9.99 for non-travel items, waived if the item arrived damaged or was the wrong product. Original shipping is not refunded, online orders cannot be returned in stores, and there are no exchanges.

When does Samsonite have sales?

In late October the site ran 30% off select styles, ending November 9, 2026, with Outline Pro, Proxis and some other lines excluded, plus 20% off two or more pieces from Outline Pro, Better Than Basic and Axxis. New email subscribers are offered 10% off a first order, with exclusions.
