CALPAK Review 2026: What's Actually Worth Buying
CALPAK’s $215 Hue carry-on matches its pricier Ambeur on size and weight. Here is which suitcase to buy, why discounted colors can be final sale, and the fees that come with returns and warranty claims.
We may earn a commission if you buy through our links, once we join a brand's program. It never changes a call. How that works.
- Skip the upgrade
- Skip the Ambeur carry-on. It costs $30 more than the Hue, weighs the same 7.6 pounds and holds 39.2 liters against 39, a difference you will not pack.
- Best time to buy
- When a color you like is marked down, as five Hue Medium Trunk colors were in October. Check the final-sale notice first, and know that full-price orders get a one-time price adjustment within five days.

CALPAK is a California travel brand best known for colorful polycarbonate spinners and puffy Luka duffels. Its US store sells carry-ons from $185 to $450, with matching medium, large and trunk sizes, and runs frequent markdowns on individual colors and bundles.
The range is less varied than the price spread suggests. The $215 Hue, $245 Ambeur and $450 Vault carry-ons all land around 38 to 39 liters; what changes is styling, weight and closure. Our advice: buy the Hue in a color you like, pay full price only if you can live with CALPAK’s return fee, and treat any discounted color as a final sale until the product page says otherwise. The warranty is two years on these cases, and it excludes airline damage.

Hue Carry-On Luggage
$215 Same price in all 16 colors we saw in October; none were discounted.
A light, expandable polycarbonate spinner that matches CALPAK’s pricier carry-ons on space for less money.
The Hue is CALPAK’s core hardside carry-on: a polycarbonate shell over a polyester lining, 360-degree spinner wheels, a TSA-approved lock, a telescoping handle and an expansion zipper that adds up to 2 inches. CALPAK lists it at 7.6 pounds and 39 liters, 21 by 13.75 by 9 inches including wheels, with a two-year limited warranty.
Reviews shared across the Hue carry-ons average about 4.8 out of 5 from more than 500 ratings. The low ones are about space and toughness: buyers who found it smaller than expected, a shell that scratched easily or cracked at a corner within a year, and a sale buyer told after the fact that the item was final sale. The handle channel takes room from one side of the interior.
Upside
- Same 39 liters as the dearer Ambeur for $30 less
- Expands by up to 2 inches
- Sixteen colors at one price
Downside
- Shell scratches easily; some cracked corners within a year
- Handle channel eats into interior space
Specs we checked
- Capacity 39 L
- Weight 7.6 lb
- Size with wheels 21 x 13.75 x 9 in
- Warranty 2-year limited

Hue Mini Carry-On Luggage
from $185 Hazel and Mauve showed $148 in October; other colors $185.
A small rolling case sold for under-seat travel, though its depth will not suit every airline.
The Mini Hue is a 28-liter version of the carry-on, with a zippered interior divider, multiple pockets, spinner wheels and a TSA lock, at 6.1 pounds. CALPAK sells it as fitting under most airline seats. Its outside measurement is 15.75 by 13.75 by 8.75 inches, so measure it against your airline’s personal-item limit before you count on it; one low-rated reviewer said it did not meet the requirements on every flight.
Ratings average about 4.8 from nearly 400 reviews. The one- and two-star reviews mention a wobbly handle, wheels less smooth than larger cases, a case that cannot lie fully flat because of the wheel housings, and buyers who had to pay return shipping on a damaged arrival.
Upside
- Light at 6.1 pounds with a zippered divider
- Two colors discounted to $148 in October
Downside
- 8.75-inch depth exceeds some airlines’ under-seat limits
- Does not open fully flat
Specs we checked
- Capacity 28 L
- Weight 6.1 lb
- Size with wheels 15.75 x 13.75 x 8.75 in

Luka Soft-Sided Carry-On Luggage
$215
A soft-sided carry-on in CALPAK’s water-resistant Luka fabric, with a padded front laptop pocket.
The Luka swaps the hard shell for CALPAK’s water-resistant polyester, adds two quick-access front pockets including a padded compartment for a 17-inch laptop, and keeps spinner wheels and a TSA lock. It is the lightest full-size carry-on here at 6.4 pounds, and the same $215 as the Hue.
The trade is space: 31 liters against the Hue’s 39, with an interior 7.5 inches deep. Reviews average about 4.9 from fewer than 200 ratings, and the critical notes are consistent: a handle that feels flimsy or iffy, a front flap that is hard to get into, and one buyer whose bag’s tag listed 20.75 by 14.25 by 9.5 inches rather than the website’s 21 by 13.75 by 9. Check that against strict airlines.
Upside
- Front laptop compartment for up to 17 inches
- Light at 6.4 pounds
Downside
- 31 liters, well below the Hue at the same price
- Several reviewers doubt the handle’s durability

- Capacity 31 L

- Material water-resistant polyester

Hue Starter Bundle 8-Piece Set
$578 List price. Every color showed $346.80 in October, 40% off.
A Hue carry-on and large case with cubes, pouches and a tag, cheaper than the two suitcases bought separately.
The bundle pairs a Hue carry-on (39 liters, 7.6 pounds) with a Hue large case (99 liters, 12.2 pounds, 30 inches tall), three packing cubes, two pouches and a luggage tag. Both cases expand by up to 2 inches. At October’s $346.80, it cost less than the Hue carry-on and Hue large at their separate prices of $215 and $295.
The catch is the return policy. CALPAK excludes flash-sale items and anything marked final sale from returns, and its product pages carry a final-sale notice; one low-rated reviewer said she learned a sale purchase was final only after trying to return it. Bundle reviews, shared with the Hue line, include a couple whose set cracked and lost its side feet on its first flight.
Upside
- Two suitcases plus organizers for less than the cases alone
- Matching expandable carry-on and large case
Downside
- Discounted items may be final sale
- Some reports of cracks on a first trip
Specs we checked
- Large case 99 L, 12.2 lb, 30 x 18.75 x 11.75 in
- Carry-on 39 L, 7.6 lb
- Extras 3 packing cubes, 2 pouches, 1 tag

Hue Medium Trunk Luggage
$285 Black was $285 in October; five other colors were $228.
A deep, squarer checked case for shoes and bulky gear, worth it at the discounted color price.
The trunk shape trades height for depth: 27.75 by 13.75 by 11.5 inches with wheels, 68 liters, and an expansion zipper that adds up to 2 inches. It weighs 10 pounds and has a cushioned top handle, spinner wheels and a TSA lock, with the same two-year limited warranty as the rest of the Hue line.
It has only a few dozen reviews, averaging about 4.9, which is too few for a durability verdict. The one three-star review is telling: the shell scratched straight out of the box and came off its first flight with a dent in the top corner. CALPAK’s warranty excludes airline damage, so that kind of dent is your claim with the carrier.
Upside
- Deep 11.5-inch interior for bulky items
- Five colors discounted 20% in October
Downside
- Too few reviews to judge durability
- Shell scratches and dents easily, one owner reports
Specs we checked
- Capacity 68 L
- Weight 10 lb
- Size with wheels 27.75 x 13.75 x 11.5 in

Ambeur Carry-On Luggage
$245
CALPAK’s best-selling carry-on, which is a ribbed-look Hue in all but price.
On the spec sheet the Ambeur and Hue are twins: polycarbonate shell, polyester lining, 7.6 pounds, spinner wheels, TSA lock and an expansion zipper. The Ambeur is half an inch taller and a quarter inch wider at 21.5 by 14 by 9 inches, and holds 39.2 liters to the Hue’s 39. It costs $30 more, and it is the piece to buy if you want it to match an Ambeur medium or large.
Its reviews are strong, about 4.9 from roughly 500 ratings, and the complaints are familiar: a case that tipped over on carpet and scratched after one trip, a shell that felt flimsier than expected, a cracked side after a gate check, and a wheel that fell off after three years, just past the warranty.
Upside
- Highly rated, with matching medium and large sizes
- Slightly wider and taller than the Hue
Downside
- $30 more than the Hue for essentially the same space and weight
- Scratches and cracks show up in low reviews
Specs we checked
- Capacity 39.2 L
- Weight 7.6 lb
- Size with wheels 21.5 x 14 x 9 in

Vault Carry-On Luggage
$450
An aluminum-frame, zipperless carry-on that costs twice the Hue and holds less.
The Vault adds the features that usually justify a premium: an aluminum frame with two latches instead of a zipper, an anywhere-stop trolley handle, a cushioned grip, a removable divider and a removable, washable lining. It is new, with about two dozen reviews averaging 4.9.
We pass on value. It costs $450, more than twice the Hue, yet holds 38 liters to the Hue’s 39 and weighs 10 pounds to its 7.6. The most detailed review, a four-star from a frequent traveler, flags the closure itself: on the carry-on only one of the two latches locks, and the other can pop open with a small bump, a worry if the case is ever gate-checked.
Upside
- Zipperless aluminum-frame closure
- Handle stops at any height
Downside
- Heavier and smaller than the $215 Hue
- Only one of two latches locks on the carry-on
Specs we checked
- Capacity 38 L
- Weight 10 lb
- Size with wheels 22 x 14.25 x 9 in
- Closure aluminum frame, two latches

What customers say
On CALPAK’s own pages the cases rate highly, about 4.8 to 4.9 out of 5 on every suitcase we checked, though reviews are shared across related models. Trustpilot is cooler at 3.6 out of 5, “Average”, when we read it in October, and recent reviews there are mostly happy buyers of duffels and small bags.
The one-star reviews tell a different story. They describe returns submitted online with no confirmation and only automated email replies, a long wait for an order to process, and warranty or spare-part requests that ended when the part was out of stock, which CALPAK’s replies confirm can happen. Suitcase complaints repeat on both platforms: wheels and plastic feet breaking off, shells cracking or scratching quickly, and sale buyers surprised by final-sale terms. CALPAK answers most negative Trustpilot reviews publicly.

Questions, answered
Is CALPAK’s Hue carry-on a real carry-on size?
CALPAK sells it as a carry-on and lists it at 21 by 13.75 by 9 inches including wheels; compare that with your airline’s published limit. Expansion makes it deeper, so close the expansion zipper before boarding. The Mini Hue is sold as an under-seat bag, but at 8.75 inches deep it may exceed stricter personal-item limits, and a low-rated review says it did not meet every airline’s rules.
Does it cost money to return CALPAK luggage?
Yes. CALPAK accepts returns and exchanges of unused items within 30 days of delivery, with original packaging and uncut tags, but deducts a flat $24.95 fee for luggage and $12.95 for bags and accessories. Sample sale and flash sale items, gift cards and anything marked final sale cannot be returned. Test-pack with tags on, since any sign of use can void the return.
What does CALPAK’s warranty cover?
Manufacturing defects in material and workmanship, for one, two or ten years depending on the product; the cases here carry two years. Claims are online only, need proof of purchase and a $24.95 servicing fee for luggage, and you ship the case to CALPAK at your cost. Damage from airlines, normal wear and accidents is excluded, so file airline damage with the carrier at the airport.
