American Eagle Review: The Smart Buys (and What to Skip)
American Eagle’s list prices are mostly for show: in October its jeans sat 40% below them. Which fits are worth buying, which wash to avoid, and how the 60-day return rule really works.

- Skip the $89.95 AE Loose Jean in Medium Destroy. Other washes of the same jean list at $59.95, and this one has no stretch at all.
- Best time to buy
- Now through the holidays. In late October most jeans showed 40% off list, the app added 10%, and purchases from October 23 can be returned until February 1, 2027.

American Eagle sells jeans, tees and casual basics to a mostly young crowd, and its pricing works like a permanent sale. Jeans list between about $50 and $90, but in late October almost every pair we checked was 40% off, with an extra 10% in the app. Nobody should pay list here.
The catch is consistency. AE’s own lowest-rated reviews keep returning to the same three problems: thin denim that rips at the crotch or seat within weeks, the same size fitting differently from one wash to the next, and orders that never arrive. Our advice: buy during a markdown, order the same size in the wash you want rather than assuming, and keep tags on until you have tried everything, because returns must be unworn, unwashed and fully tagged.
The lineup, model by model
AE Super High-Waisted Baggy Wide-Leg Jean
$69.95 Medium Bright Indigo. It was $41.97, 40% off, in late October.
AE’s most reviewed women’s jean by a wide margin, a soft, slouchy wide leg that makes sense at its usual markdown.
This is a super-high-rise, wide-leg jean with an 11.25-inch rise and a 22-inch leg opening, cut in an 86% cotton, 13% lyocell, 1% elastane denim that AE calls ridiculously soft and lightweight. Its page showed more than 12,000 reviews, far more than any other jean we checked.
That volume makes the complaints easy to read. Sizing is the big one, and AE contradicts itself: the page says to wear your true size for a borrowed-from-the-boys look, then warns that the style runs small and to consider sizing up. Low-rated reviewers describe pairs that would not go over their hips and others that were far too high or too short. A few call the fabric paper thin, almost see-through against the light. At about $42 it is still the safest place to start.
Worth it for
- Huge review base, so fit advice is easy to find
- Soft cotton-lyocell denim with a little stretch
Watch out for
- AE’s own page both says true to size and says size up
- Some reviewers find the denim thin
The numbers
- Fabric 86% cotton, 13% lyocell, 1% elastane
- Rise 11.25 inches
- Leg opening 22 inches

AE Original Bootcut Jean
$49.95 Dark Ink. It was $29.97 in late October; other washes list at $59.95.
A high-stretch men’s bootcut that costs under $30 on sale, with a durability record that keeps it from a top call.
The Original Bootcut is straight through the thigh with a 17.5-inch bootcut opening, made in AE’s high-stretch denim: 71% cotton, 20% recycled cotton, 8% recycled polyester and 1% elastane in the Dark Ink wash. Sizes run from 28 to 44 in the waist with lengths up to 36, and the darker washes list $10 below the lighter ones.
The reviews, several hundred per wash, are heavy with durability complaints. Parents and long-time buyers describe crotch and seat splits within one to two months, including one who bought 12 pairs and saw every crotch fail within about five wears. Fit varies too: one buyer found a black pair two inches longer than a blue pair in the same size, and others say the leg is barely bootcut at all. At $29.97 it is cheap enough to tolerate; at $59.95 it would not be.
Worth it for
- Under $30 on sale in the darkest wash
- High-stretch denim and wide size range
Watch out for
- Frequent reports of crotch and seat rips within weeks
- Length and leg shape vary between washes
The numbers
- Fabric 71% cotton, 20% recycled cotton, 8% recycled polyester, 1% elastane
- Leg opening 17.5 inches
- Stretch high

AE Standard Fit Lightweight Logo T-Shirt
$17.95 Black. It was $9.99, 44% off, in late October.
A basic standard-fit logo tee that AE sells for about ten dollars, and the easiest way to hit the free-shipping threshold.
This is AE’s plain, standard-fit tee with a small logo, in a 60% cotton, 40% polyester blend. The black version alone had 1,728 reviews, and the listing badge claims more than a thousand five-star ones across colors. At $9.99 it was one of the cheapest items on the site.
You get what that price suggests. The lowest-rated reviews mention a shirt that was see-through, one that shrank after washing and a few that arrived with a hole. A larger share are about delivery rather than the shirt: several buyers say their order never arrived, including one who paid for faster shipping. Because it is cheap, it is also the item most people add to reach the $75 free-shipping line, which is a reasonable use for it.
Worth it for
- Around $10 on sale
- Listing badge cites 1K+ five-star reviews
Watch out for
- Thin enough that some find it see-through
- Some reports of shrinking after washing
The numbers
- Fabric 60% cotton, 40% polyester
- Fit standard

AE Low-Rise Cozy Baggy Jean
$79.95 Tinted Medium. It was $47.97 in late October.
A soft, lightweight low-rise baggy jean that reviewers say is too thin for its $79.95 list price.
The Cozy Baggy sits low, with a 10 1/4-inch rise, a relaxed baggy leg and a very wide 26-inch opening. AE sells it on softness, and it has some stretch. It had 133 reviews when we read them.
The complaints are mostly about value and length. One reviewer called the soft, lightweight denim cheap at $79.95, and another said to buy it only on sale. Several found it too long, with no short inseam offered, while one buyer of the same size in two colors found the dark pair at least an inch shorter than the black. Others say it runs big and to size down. At the October price of $47.97 it is a fair gamble; at list price it is not.
Worth it for
- Very soft, relaxed baggy fit
- Low 10 1/4-inch rise for that silhouette
Watch out for
- Thin denim for an $80 list price
- No short length; inseam varies by color
The numbers
- Rise 10 1/4 inches
- Leg opening 26 inches
- Stretch some

AE Loose Jean
$89.95 Medium Destroy. It was $53.97 in late October; other washes list at $59.95.
A roomy, rigid men’s jean whose distressed wash costs $30 more than the plain ones.
The AE Loose Jean is cut roomy from seat to thigh with a 16.75-inch leg opening, and AE labels it no stretch. The Medium Destroy wash lists at $89.95, while other washes of the same jean were listed at $59.95, so most of the extra money pays for the rips.
We pass because the problems are structural. In one wash’s reviews, a buyer saw a thin, white, threadbare area in the crotch on every pair in a store, assumed it was a design detail and got a hole after about five wears. Another says the fit was so small it needed three waist sizes up, while a third says it runs large. A rigid jean with that spread of fit reports is a poor online buy, and you cannot return it once worn.
Worth it for
- Roomy loose fit through seat and thigh
- Plain washes cost $30 less than this one
Watch out for
- No stretch, with very inconsistent fit reports
- Threadbare crotch reported by an early buyer
The numbers
- Stretch none
- Leg opening 16.75 inches
- Fit loose through seat and thigh

What customers say
On AE’s own site the big styles carry hundreds to thousands of reviews, and plenty are glowing. Sorted lowest first, though, the jeans reviews are strikingly consistent: crotch and seat rips within weeks, denim described as thin, and the same size fitting differently from one wash or color to another. Several long-time customers say quality has slipped. Lost or late packages show up even under cheap tees.
Trustpilot is harsher still, rating American Eagle 1.4 out of 5, “Bad”, when we read it. Recent complaints cover returns refused because a price tag was missing from an item the buyer says arrived that way, store purchases that must go back to a store rather than by mail, two-day shipping that did not arrive in two days, and promotions on the store credit card that were not honored. Keep every tag and packing email until you are sure.

Constant 40% markdowns make AE cheap, but recurring complaints about thin denim, crotch rips, sizing that changes between washes and lost orders keep the product and experience scores low.

Questions, answered
What is the return window for American Eagle jeans?
AE gives a full refund within 60 days of purchase, and merchandise credit after that. Items must be unworn, unwashed and undamaged, and Trustpilot reviewers say returns have been refused over missing tags. Anything bought from October 23 can be returned until February 1, 2027 under the holiday policy. Mail returns cost $5 unless you are a Real Rewards Level 3 member or cardholder; store returns are free.
Should I ever pay full price at American Eagle?
Rarely. In late October almost every jean we checked was 40% below its list price, a basic tee was 44% off, and the app advertised a further 10%. The lists exist mainly as a reference for the markdowns. If an item you want is at list, waiting a week or two is usually the smart move, though we cannot promise a specific sale date.
Why do AE jeans in the same size fit differently?
AE does not explain it, but its own reviews document it repeatedly: a black bootcut two inches longer than a blue one in the same size, and a Cozy Baggy where one color was an inch shorter. Different washes use different fabric blends, which changes stretch. Order the exact wash you want, and use free in-store returns if a store is near you.
