Amazon Review 2026: What's Actually Worth Buying

Amazon’s own brands range from excellent value to quiet duds. Here are the house-brand basics and devices worth buying, the new Fire TV Stick to avoid, and why list prices on Amazon devices mean little.

We may earn a commission if you buy through our links, once we join a brand's program. It never changes a call. How that works.

Best time to buy
During a device deal. In October the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus sold 43% below its $69.99 list price, and Amazon’s Prime page promises members-only events like Prime Day.

Amazon sells everything, but it also makes a growing pile of it: Amazon Basics for batteries and household gear, Amazon Essentials for clothing, and its own Kindle and Fire TV devices. Those house brands are where the value is clearest, because Amazon ships them itself and prices them below the name brands sitting next to them.

The devices need more care. Amazon’s list prices on its own hardware are often far above what it actually charges, so the discount badge is not a reason to buy. And a cheaper new model is not automatically better: the newest Fire TV Stick 4K has a 3.2-star rating, while the $10-pricier 4K Plus sits at 4.6. Our advice is to stock up on Basics, buy Essentials tees in a size up, and never pay list price for a Kindle or a Fire stick.

What to buy (and what not to)

01Smart buyBest for: Remotes, clocks and toys

Amazon Basics 48-Pack AA Alkaline High-Performance Batteries

$15.29 48-pack, about 32 cents a battery. Subscribe & Save cut it to $14.53.

The house-brand AA battery that most households already own, at about a third of a dollar each.

These are single-use AA alkalines with a 10-year leak-free shelf life, sold and shipped by Amazon in frustration-free packaging. The listing shows 4.7 stars from more than 667,000 ratings and a note of 30,000-plus bought in the past week.

Read the battery-life feedback before you buy for high-drain gadgets. Amazon’s own review summary counts more negative than positive mentions of battery life, and the complaints are specific: one buyer says four batteries lasted just two sessions in a powered floor mop, another that they drain quickly in an automatic soap dispenser but are fine in clocks. Separately, reviewers split on reliability, with some reporting dead cells in the box. One oddity: the bullet points describe them as 12.0-volt, while the title correctly says 1.5 volts. Use them for low-drain devices and buy rechargeables for the rest.

Good

  • About 32 cents per AA battery
  • 10-year shelf life for emergency storage
  • Sold and shipped by Amazon

Not so good

  • Battery life gets more negative than positive mentions in reviews
  • Some buyers report dead batteries out of the pack

From the product page

  • Count 48 AA alkaline batteries
  • Voltage 1.5 volts, single use
  • Shelf life 10 years
  • Capacity 2875 mAh, per listing

02Good buyBest for: Plain tees in two-packs

Amazon Essentials Men’s Short-Sleeve Crewneck T-Shirts

$16.20 Pack of two, Regular fit, Black, Large. One color was $12.81.

A two-pack of OEKO-TEX-certified crew tees for about $8 a shirt, in regular and slim fits.

Amazon Essentials sells these in packs of two, in regular or slim fit, from XX-Small up to big and tall sizes. Solid colors are 100% cotton; heathers are a 60/40 cotton and polyester blend, which one buyer only noticed after the fact. They carry OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, with a tagless printed label and ribbed neck trim, and average 4.4 stars from more than 8,400 ratings.

Shrinkage is the recurring problem. Amazon’s review summary counts 121 negative mentions of shrinkage against 42 positive, and size draws more negative mentions than positive, with buyers saying the shirts run small or end up too short to tuck in. One repeat buyer also says a recent order felt thinner and rougher than earlier ones. Size up, wash cold, and skip the dryer if length matters.

Good

  • Around $8 per shirt in a two-pack
  • Solid colors are 100% cotton, OEKO-TEX certified

Not so good

  • Frequent complaints of shrinking after washing
  • Many buyers say the sizes run small and short

From the product page

  • Fabric solids 100% cotton; heathers 60/40 cotton-poly
  • Pack 2 shirts
  • Fits regular or slim
  • Certification OEKO-TEX Standard 100

03Good buyBest for: Most 4K TVs

Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Plus

$69.99 List price. It sold for $39.99, 43% off, when we checked in October 2026.

The Fire stick with Dolby Vision and Wi-Fi 6 that, at its sale price, costs only $10 more than the weaker new 4K stick.

The 4K Plus streams in 4K with Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos, supports Wi-Fi 6, and ships with an Alexa Voice Remote that controls TV power and volume. It runs the 2026 Fire TV interface and supports cloud gaming through Xbox Game Pass and Luna, with a subscription and controller sold separately. It averages 4.6 stars from more than 115,000 ratings and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Reliability is its weak spot. Amazon’s review summary counts more than 1,000 negative mentions of reliability, describing sticks that stopped working after days or weeks, froze on loading screens, or would not reset, and the remote also draws more negative than positive mentions. Note too that the full Alexa+ experience requires Prime or a paid Alexa+ plan. At $39.99, it is still the Fire stick to buy.

Good

  • Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Atmos with Wi-Fi 6
  • Large review base averaging 4.6 stars

Not so good

  • Over 1,000 negative review mentions about reliability
  • Full Alexa+ needs Prime or a paid plan

From the product page

  • Video 4K with Dolby Vision and HDR10+
  • Audio Dolby Atmos
  • Wi-Fi Wi-Fi 6
  • Warranty 1-year limited

04PassBest for: Nobody, at current prices

Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K (newest model)

$59.99 List price. It sold for $29.99 in October 2026, only $10 under the 4K Plus.

Amazon’s newest basic 4K stick, which buyers rate far below the older 4K Plus, mostly over missing apps.

The new Fire TV Stick 4K brings a redesigned remote, Wi-Fi 6, HDR10+ and the ability to draw power straight from the TV’s USB port. It supports Dolby Atmos pass-through, but Amazon’s own note says Dolby Vision requires stepping up to the 4K Max.

The reviews are the reason to pass. It averages just 3.2 stars from 463 ratings, and Amazon’s review summary counts 78 negative mentions of app compatibility against 17 positive. Buyers say apps they used on older Fire sticks are missing, the Downloader app is unavailable, and sideloading is not possible. Others report buffering and grey icons for downloaded apps. If you sideload or depend on niche apps, this stick is a step backward, and at $29.99 it saves only $10 over the 4K Plus.

Good

  • Can run off the TV’s USB port with no wall adapter
  • New remote with TV power and volume controls

Not so good

  • Averages 3.2 stars; app compatibility is the top complaint
  • No sideloading and no Dolby Vision

From the product page

  • Video 4K with HDR10+
  • Audio Dolby Atmos pass-through
  • Wi-Fi Wi-Fi 6
  • Power from TV USB port via short USB-C cable

Kindle 16 GB (2024 model)

$149.99 Black, read October 2026, with no discount running.

The entry Kindle: a 6-inch glare-free screen, 16 GB and weeks of battery, at $50 below the Paperwhite.

The basic Kindle has a 6-inch glare-free display with an adjustable front light that Amazon says is 25% brighter at its maximum, plus dark mode, 16 GB of storage and up to six weeks of battery life. It is made with 75% recycled plastics and includes a one-year limited warranty. It averages 4.5 stars from more than 19,000 ratings, with buyers praising the size and weight for one-handed reading.

The complaints center on responsiveness and charging. Amazon’s summary shows lag splitting reviewers almost evenly, and the most negative reviews describe units that would not hold Wi-Fi, would not hold a charge, or kept sleeping despite the settings. Compared with the $199.99 Paperwhite, it lacks waterproofing and the larger 7-inch screen. Do not pay full price; Amazon’s own devices discount often.

Good

  • Light and pocketable 6-inch reader
  • 16 GB and up to six weeks of battery

Not so good

  • Lag and charging problems in many low-rated reviews
  • Not waterproof, unlike the Paperwhite

From the product page

  • Display 6-inch glare-free, adjustable front light
  • Storage 16 GB
  • Battery up to 6 weeks
  • Warranty 1-year limited

Amazon Prime

$139 Per year, or $14.99 a month after a free 30-day trial.

Fast free delivery plus Prime Video and member deal events, for $139 a year after a 30-day free trial.

Prime costs $14.99 a month or $139 a year after a free 30-day trial. It bundles same-day, one-day and two-day delivery on millions of items, Prime Video, Amazon Music, unlimited photo storage, 10 cents a gallon off fuel at participating sites, a free Grubhub+ membership, and access to members-only sale events such as Prime Day. Free same-day grocery delivery applies to $25 orders in selected areas. Shoppers aged 18 to 24 and students get a six-month trial and then half price, and qualifying government assistance recipients pay less too.

The weakness shows up in recent Trustpilot reviews: deliveries left at the wrong address, paid faster delivery that never came, and refunds that took repeated calls. The membership also renews automatically when the trial ends, so set a reminder.

Good

  • Free fast delivery on millions of items
  • Members-only deal events, including Prime Day

Not so good

  • Renews automatically after the free trial
  • Delivery complaints dominate recent Trustpilot reviews

From the product page

  • Price $139 a year or $14.99 a month
  • Trial 30 days free
  • Delivery same-day, one-day and two-day on eligible items
  • Extras Prime Video, Amazon Music, Grubhub+

What customers say

Amazon’s product ratings for its own brands are high: the Basics AA batteries show 4.7 stars from more than 667,000 ratings, the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus 4.6. Individual reviews now sit behind a sign-in, but each page shows an AI summary with counts of positive and negative mentions, and those counts are where the weak spots appear, from battery life to shrinkage.

Trustpilot rates Amazon 1.5 out of 5, “Bad”, as we read it in October 2026. Recent one-star reviews describe parcels left at the wrong address or in a building lift, a paid overnight delivery that never arrived and was not refunded, a refurbished laptop whose promised refund was later denied, and a customer charged again for an item returned months earlier. A long review from a small seller complains about Seller Central, a reminder that many listings come from businesses Amazon does not run.

Things people ask

How do I know if Amazon or a third-party seller is shipping my order?

Check the Shipper / Seller line in the buy box. Every product in this guide showed Amazon.com for both. When a seller ships its own inventory, Amazon’s return policy says your return goes back to that seller, not to Amazon. If a seller fails to deliver or refuses a valid return, the A-to-z Guarantee lets you ask Amazon for a refund, within 90 days of the latest delivery date.

How many days does Amazon allow for returns?

Most items can go back within 30 days of delivery in original or unused condition, and most include at least one free return option. Fees can apply if you pick a paid drop-off method, return a heavy or bulky item, or have an unusually high return rate. Some things cannot be returned at all, including items marked Final Sale and Amazon Haul items priced at $3 or less.

Should I buy the new Fire TV Stick 4K or the 4K Plus?

The 4K Plus. In October 2026 it sold for $39.99 against $29.99 for the new 4K stick, and the extra $10 buys Dolby Vision support and a far better track record: 4.6 stars from over 115,000 ratings versus 3.2 from 463. The new stick’s reviewers complain most about missing apps and no sideloading, which matters if you rely on less common apps.

Is Amazon Prime worth $139 a year?

If you order from Amazon most weeks or watch Prime Video regularly, the delivery speed and streaming usually justify it. If you shop occasionally, the monthly plan at $14.99 lets you join for a Prime Day or a holiday month and cancel afterward. Students and qualifying government assistance recipients pay less. Remember that the free trial renews automatically, so cancel before the 30 days end if you do not want it.
