Manscaped Review: The Smart Buys (and What to Skip)

Manscaped’s $89.99 Lawn Mower 4.0 Pro carries the same two-year warranty as the $119.99 Gen 6. Buy at list price, skip the auto-enrolling VIP subscription, and budget for $20-$25 blades.

Manscaped sells body and groin trimmers, face shavers, beard trimmers and a long list of $12.99 washes and gels, mostly direct from its own site. Its trimmers run from $69.99 for the Lawn Mower 3.0 Plus to $119.99 for the new Ultra Gen 6, and kits bundle them with sprays, boxers and bags for up to $199.99.

The pricing trick to watch is the VIP Member Price. It is the number shown largest on most product pages, but picking it enrolls you in a refill subscription billed every three months until you cancel. The real cost of ownership is blades: $19.99 to $24.99 each for trimmers, and the dual-head models use two. Our advice is to buy the 4.0 Pro outright, at list price, and replace its single blade when it dulls.

Each model, priced and called

01Smart buyBest for: Most groin and body trimming

The Lawn Mower 4.0 Pro

$89.99 List price. The $84.99 VIP price adds a $20.40 refill box every three months.

The sweet spot in the range: waterproof, wireless charging, travel lock and a two-year warranty for $30 under the flagship.

The 4.0 Pro uses Manscaped’s rounded SkinSafe ceramic blade, with two adjustable combs from 2 to 12 mm, an LED spotlight and a motor that holds constant speed as the battery runs down. It is IPX7 waterproof, so you can use it in the shower and rinse it under the tap. Runtime is up to 60 minutes from a 600mAh battery, and it adds wireless charging and a travel lock over the cheaper 3.0 Plus.

Its replacement blade is $19.99 and fits the 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0, which is cheaper than the $24.99 blades for the 5.0 and Gen 6. The complaint to know about comes from Trustpilot, where several owners describe batteries that stop holding a charge after a year or so; the two-year warranty is your protection there.

Good

  • Wireless charging and travel lock at $89.99
  • Cheapest blade refills of the current trimmers
  • Two-year device warranty

Not so good

  • Trimmer only; no foil head for a closer shave
  • Battery-fade complaints on older Lawn Mowers

The numbers

  • Runtime up to 60 minutes
  • Combs two adjustable, 2-12 mm
  • Water IPX7 waterproof
  • Blade refill $19.99

02Good buyBest for: A smooth finish after trimming

The Crop Shaver

$24.99 Includes 4 replacement blades; refills $14.99.

A three-blade manual razor made for the groin, sold with four extra blades and a case, and the cheapest way to go smooth.

The Crop Shaver is a manual three-blade razor with a wide pivoting head, a rubber micro comb that lifts hair ahead of the blades and lubricating strips above and below them. The kit includes the handle, four replacement blades and a travel case, and refill blades cost $14.99.

If you want a smooth result rather than short stubble, this costs far less than paying extra for a trimmer with a foil head, and Manscaped’s own routine pairs it with any Lawn Mower for that step. It is still a blade, so it carries the usual nick and irritation risk of a razor, and Manscaped’s SkinSafe claims apply to its electric devices rather than this one.

Good

  • Four spare blades and a case included
  • Far cheaper than a dual-head trimmer upgrade

Not so good

  • Manual razor, so more nick risk than a trimmer

The numbers

  • Blades three stainless steel
  • Head wide and pivoting, with micro comb
  • Includes handle, 4 blades, travel case
  • Refill $14.99

03Good buyBest for: Beards of any length

The Beard Hedger

$99.99 List price; VIP price $94.99 with a beard-care refill box.

A beard trimmer with a zoom wheel for 20 lengths instead of a bag of clip-on guards.

The Beard Hedger sets length with a zoom wheel, giving 20 settings from 0.5 to 10 mm in half-millimeter steps, and an extended comb takes it to 20 mm for longer beards. The blade is a 41 mm titanium-coated stainless T-blade, the battery lasts up to 60 minutes with a three-level charge indicator, and it is waterproof. A travel bag, adapter and USB-C cable come in the box.

It shares the two-year warranty of the groin trimmers. The ongoing cost is the $34.99 replacement blade, the priciest of Manscaped’s trimmer blades, and the extended comb is a separate $14.99 purchase for anyone growing past 10 mm.

Good

  • Twenty lengths from one wheel, no loose guards
  • Waterproof, with a travel bag included

Not so good

  • Replacement blade costs $34.99
  • Long-beard comb sold separately

The numbers

  • Lengths 20 settings, 0.5-10 mm
  • Blade 41 mm titanium-coated T-blade
  • Runtime up to 60 minutes

04Good buyBest for: Trim and shave in one

The Lawn Mower Ultra Gen 6

$119.99 List price; the $109.99 VIP price adds a $25 blade box every three months.

The new flagship, with swappable trimmer and foil heads, a metal frame and up to 100 minutes per charge.

Gen 6 has interchangeable heads: a ceramic trimmer blade and a bidirectional SkinSafe foil for a near-shave finish. It comes with a fixed 1.4 mm comb and three adjustable combs from 3 to 13 mm, a weighted metal frame, a color display that shows battery and tutorials, and a two-tone LED light. Battery life is up to 100 minutes, it is IPX7 waterproof, and it charges by USB-C or wirelessly.

The extra $30 over the 4.0 Pro buys the foil head and the longer battery. Keeping it sharp costs more, though: each head’s replacement is $24.99, or $39.99 for both together. Trustpilot’s recent reviews of Gen 6 are positive, but it is new, so there is little long-term battery history yet.

Good

  • Trimmer and foil heads in one device
  • Up to 100 minutes of runtime
  • Metal frame and color battery display

Not so good

  • Two blades to replace, $39.99 together
  • Too new for long-term battery evidence

The numbers

  • Heads ceramic trimmer, SkinSafe foil
  • Combs 1.4 mm fixed, three 3-13 mm
  • Runtime up to 100 minutes
  • Water IPX7 waterproof

The Performance Package Ultra Gen 6

$179.99 List price; VIP price $159.99 with a $35.40 refill box every three months.

Gen 6, the Weed Whacker 3.0 Pro and three groin care products, plus boxers and a toiletry bag thrown in.

The package bundles the Lawn Mower Ultra Gen 6 with the Weed Whacker 3.0 Pro nose, ear and eyebrow trimmer, Ball Scrub, Ball Shave Gel and Ball Deo. Free gifts were Boxers 2.0, The Shed 2.0 toiletry bag and Magic Mat shaving mats. Bought separately at list price, the two devices and three products come to about $199, so the kit saves roughly $19 before the gifts.

That is a modest saving if you would not use every add-on, and Manscaped’s return policy says packages must be returned complete, so you cannot send back just the bits you did not want. One Trustpilot reviewer who bought a package found both trimmers underpowered and the body trimmer prone to clogging.

Good

  • Two trimmers and three products for $179.99
  • Boxers and toiletry bag included as gifts

Not so good

  • Must be returned whole, not item by item
  • Saves about $19 over buying separately

The numbers

  • Devices Lawn Mower Ultra Gen 6, Weed Whacker 3.0 Pro
  • Products Ball Scrub, Ball Shave Gel, Ball Deo
  • Gifts Boxers 2.0, The Shed 2.0, Magic Mat

06PassBest for: Nobody, now Gen 6 exists

The Lawn Mower 5.0 Ultra

$109.99 List price; VIP price $99.99 with a $22.90 refill box.

Last generation’s dual-head model, priced just $10 under its replacement with 40 fewer minutes of battery.

The 5.0 Ultra has interchangeable trimmer and foil heads, a fixed 1.4 mm comb, two adjustable combs from 2 to 12 mm, wireless charging, a travel lock and up to 60 minutes of runtime. Those are good features, and Manscaped’s own reviews page is full of five-star praise for it.

The problem is the price ladder. At $109.99 it sits $10 below the Gen 6, which adds 40 minutes of battery, a metal frame and a color display, and $20 above the 4.0 Pro. Its two replacement blades also cost $24.99 each. If you want the foil head, pay the extra $10 for Gen 6; if you do not, the 4.0 Pro is the better buy.

Good

  • Trimmer and foil heads included
  • Wireless charging and travel lock

Not so good

  • Only $10 cheaper than the newer Gen 6

The numbers

  • Heads trimmer and SkinSafe foil
  • Combs 1.4 mm fixed, two 2-12 mm
  • Runtime up to 60 minutes

Reading the one-star reviews

Trustpilot rates manscaped.com 4.6 out of 5 from 6,434 reviews, and the newest are mostly praise for fast, no-fuss replacements of trimmers that stopped charging. That praise is also a hint: battery failure is the most common problem behind them.

The one-star reviews, read newest first, repeat a few themes. Several owners say a trimmer stopped holding a charge after a year or so, and two say Manscaped disputed their warranty dates or proof of purchase. Others complain there is no easy phone line for disputes, and one says a guest checkout was moved onto a VIP subscription and charged for refills without approval. Manscaped replies to most of these publicly. Its own reviews page is a hand-picked showcase of five-star reviews, so we could not read lowest-rated reviews on the site.

Smart Score3.4/5

Solid trimmers, a two-year device warranty and quick replacements lift Manscaped; premium pricing, costly proprietary blades and complaints about batteries and surprise subscription charges hold it back.

If Manscaped is not it

  • Philips Norelco. Choose it instead if you want a body groomer from a big appliance brand without a refill subscription push.
  • Meridian. Choose it instead if you want a below-the-belt trimmer from a smaller rival with its own blade system.

FAQ

Is the VIP Member Price worth it?

Only if you want regular refills. Choosing it enrolls you in a VIP Package billed every three months, for example $25 for both Gen 6 blades. In return Manscaped gives 50% off blades and 20% off other items in the box, and VIP members get an extra VIP Protection warranty claim. You can change or cancel it in your account, but forgetting means recurring charges.

How much do Manscaped replacement blades cost?

At list price in October, the blade for the Lawn Mower 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 was $19.99. Gen 6 and 5.0 Ultra trimmer and foil blades were $24.99 each, with a $39.99 bundle for both Gen 6 heads. The Beard Hedger blade was $34.99 and Crop Shaver refills $14.99. VIP subscribers pay half price on power blades.

What does the Manscaped warranty cover?

Trimmers and shavers, including every Lawn Mower, the Beard Hedger, Weed Whacker and Chairman shavers, get two years against defects in materials and workmanship. You need proof of purchase from Manscaped or an authorized dealer, may have to send the device back, and normal wear is excluded. Manscaped chooses whether to repair or replace.

Can I return a Manscaped kit if I only want the trimmer?

No. Manscaped’s return policy says bundled packages, such as the Performance Package, must be returned in full, and it does not accept partial returns. Boxers can only be returned unopened and unworn. If you only want the trimmer, buy it on its own; the package saves about $19 at list prices.
