Merrell Review 2026: Which Hiking shoes Are Worth the Money
The plain $145 Moab 3 is still the smart Merrell to buy. Here is which waterproof version earns its premium, which to skip, and why the warranty and return rules matter more than usual.
We may earn a commission if you buy through our links, once we join a brand's program. It never changes a call. How that works.
- Skip the upgrade
- Skip the $165 to $185 waterproof Moabs unless your hikes are wet. The warranty excludes waterproofing that fades, and leaks dominate their worst reviews.
- Best time to buy
- During a sitewide event like the up-to-40%-off sale Merrell ran October 21 to 28, 2026. Email sign-ups get 15% off a first full-price order, and holiday orders are returnable until January 31, 2027.

Merrell is best known for one shoe. The Moab has been sold for more than 15 years, Merrell calls it the bestselling hiker in the world, and its current version, the Moab 3, lists at $145 on the US site with a 4.6 average from more than 2,600 ratings.
That popularity makes the brand easy to buy and easy to overspend on. The same shoe comes in waterproof, GORE-TEX and mid-height versions for $20 to $40 more, and those versions draw most of the angry reviews, usually about leaks. Merrell’s policies are also tighter than its rivals’: returns must be unworn, exchanges cannot change width, and the warranty lasts one year. Our pick is the plain Moab 3.
The lineup, model by model
Men’s Moab 3
$145 Full price on the page we read in late October.
The original breathable Moab, the best-rated pick here and the cheapest way into the line.
The Moab 3 has a pig suede and mesh upper, a bellows tongue to keep out grit, a rubber toe cap, Merrell’s Air Cushion in the heel and a Vibram TC5+ outsole made for Merrell. The page lists an 11.5 mm drop, 5 mm lugs and 460 g per shoe. On Merrell’s own reviews it averages 4.6 from 2,650 ratings, the best of the hikers here.
The weakness is consistency. The lowest-rated reviews describe a left and right shoe that felt different, heel blisters on a short walk, fraying within a week, and longtime Moab owners saying the Moab 3 fits and wears differently from earlier versions. Buy from merrell.com, try them on indoors, and return them unworn within 30 days if anything feels off.
Worth it for
- Best-rated Moab on Merrell’s site
- Breathable mesh dries faster than a membrane shoe
- Cheapest Moab 3 at $145
Watch out for
- Reviews report uneven pairs and heel blisters
- No waterproofing, so wet grass soaks through
From the product page
- Upper pig suede leather and mesh
- Outsole Vibram TC5+, 5 mm lugs
- Drop 11.5 mm
- Weight 460 g per shoe (half pair)

Men’s Moab 3 GORE-TEX®
$185 Full price on the page we read in late October.
If you need a waterproof Moab, this is the one to choose, but only for wet hiking.
This is the same Moab 3 build, with a GORE-TEX membrane in place of Merrell’s own waterproof lining. Specs match the plain Moab 3: pig suede and mesh, Vibram TC5+ outsole, 11.5 mm drop, 5 mm lugs and 460 g per shoe. It averages 4.5 from 1,745 ratings.
It is $40 more than the plain shoe, and its one-star reviews show where that money can go wrong: a fit that feels narrower than the Moab 2, a pair that split at the flex point and let water in, and a buyer who learned too late that exchanges cannot change width. Merrell’s warranty excludes the natural loss of waterproofing over time. Buy it only if your hikes are often wet, and check whether you need the wide fit before ordering.
Worth it for
- GORE-TEX membrane on the proven Moab 3 base
- Same weight as the plain Moab 3
Watch out for
- Some buyers find it narrower than the Moab 2
- Width cannot be swapped by exchange
From the product page
- Waterproofing GORE-TEX membrane
- Outsole Vibram TC5+, 5 mm lugs
- Drop 11.5 mm
- Weight 460 g per shoe (half pair)

Men’s Agility Peak 6
$160 Full price on the page we read in late October.
Merrell’s grippy, cushioned trail runner, a good buy for runners and fast hikers who want Vibram Megagrip.
The Agility Peak 6 uses a FloatPro foam midsole, a forefoot rock plate and a Vibram Megagrip outsole, with Traction Lug design now across every lug. Merrell lists a 38 mm stack, 8 mm drop, 5 mm lugs and 285 g per shoe, so it is far lighter than any Moab.
The reviews are thinner and more mixed: 4.2 from 109 ratings. The critical ones say the 6 is stiffer than the Agility Peak 5, fits orthotics less well, lets the heel lift, and feels unstable on rocks; one through-hiker found mold under the insole after it got wet. Owners of the Peak 5 should try before buying. For runners new to the line, the grip gets consistent praise.
Worth it for
- Vibram Megagrip with lugs across the whole sole
- Light at 285 g per shoe
Watch out for
- Stiffer than the Peak 5, with heel lift reported
- Only 109 ratings so far
From the product page
- Outsole Vibram Megagrip, 5 mm lugs
- Stack height 38 mm, 8 mm drop
- Weight 285 g per shoe (half pair)
- Midsole FloatPro foam, forefoot rock plate

Men’s Jungle Moc
$110 Full price on the page we read in late October.
Merrell’s long-running suede slip-on, the most-reviewed shoe here and the cheapest pick.
The Jungle Moc has a pig suede upper with double stretch gores, a breathable mesh lining, a removable EVA footbed, an Air Cushion heel and Merrell’s own sticky rubber outsole. It weighs 375 g per shoe and averages 4.6 from almost 4,000 ratings on Merrell’s site.
Its critics are mostly loyal owners. Several say recent pairs are narrower at the ball of the foot or harder to get on than older ones, one says the new pair sent them to a podiatrist, and another reports a fall on a wet surface. A buyer who expected a 30% discount found only some colors were on sale. Check the price of your color in the cart, and try them on before you wear them out.
Worth it for
- Nearly 4,000 ratings averaging 4.6
- Cheapest pick at $110
Watch out for
- Recent pairs reported narrower than older ones
- One review describes poor grip on wet floors
From the product page
- Upper pig suede leather, double stretch gores
- Outsole Merrell sticky rubber
- Weight 375 g per shoe (half pair)
- Footbed removable EVA, 50% recycled

Men’s Moab 3 Waterproof
$165 Full price on the page we read in late October.
Merrell’s in-house waterproof Moab; at $20 more than the plain shoe, the leak complaints make it a sale buy.
The Moab 3 Waterproof swaps GORE-TEX for Merrell’s own waterproof membrane, which it says seals out water and lets moisture escape. Otherwise it is the Moab 3: pig suede and mesh upper, Vibram TC5+ outsole and Air Cushion heel. Its page lists 480 g per shoe, an 11.55 mm drop and 5 mm lugs. It averages 4.5 from 963 ratings.
The one-star reviews are dominated by one complaint: socks soaked after a walk through wet grass, sometimes within two weeks. Others report soles separating, a lace loop tearing out and a size 14 that fit like a 12. Because the warranty does not cover waterproofing that degrades over time, we would not pay full price. At a sitewide discount, it is a fair damp-weather shoe.
Worth it for
- $20 less than the GORE-TEX version
- Same proven Moab 3 sole and cushioning
Watch out for
- Most one-star reviews report wet socks in wet grass
- Some reviews say it runs small
From the product page
- Waterproofing Merrell waterproof membrane
- Outsole Vibram TC5+, 5 mm lugs
- Drop 11.55 mm
- Weight 480 g per shoe

Men’s Moab 3 Mid Waterproof
$175 Full price on the page we read in late October.
The Moab as a mid boot, with ankle coverage, but the highest share of low ratings among the Moab 3 picks.
The Mid Waterproof adds ankle height to the Moab 3 recipe: Merrell’s waterproof membrane, pig suede and mesh, a molded nylon arch shank, the Air Cushion heel and the Vibram TC5+ outsole. It weighs 495 g per shoe, with an 11.5 mm drop and 5 mm lugs, and averages 4.5 from 1,350 ratings.
One or two stars make up about 9% of those ratings, the highest share of the Moab 3 picks. Leaks are the main theme, from a UK walker soaked within thirty seconds of a wet field to an owner whose liner failed after four months. One owner found it narrower than the low Moab 3 and another called it the most slippery boot he had owned. If you need ankle cover, wait for a discount and weatherproof it yourself.
Worth it for
- Ankle coverage and an arch shank for rough ground
- Same Vibram TC5+ outsole as the low Moab
Watch out for
- Repeated reports of leaking in wet grass and rain
- One review calls it the most slippery boot its owner had worn
From the product page
- Height mid, waterproof membrane
- Outsole Vibram TC5+, 5 mm lugs
- Drop 11.5 mm
- Weight 495 g per shoe (half pair)

Men’s Moab Speed 2 GORE-TEX®
$175 Full price on the page we read in late October.
A lighter, sportier Moab with GORE-TEX, let down by the weakest ratings of the hiking picks.
The Moab Speed 2 GORE-TEX is the athletic branch of the family: a nylon ripstop and TPU upper, FloatPro foam, a FlexPlate for stability, a Vibram TC5+ outsole and GORE-TEX lining. Merrell lists a 34 to 24 mm stack, a 10 mm drop, 4 mm lugs and 365 g per shoe, so it is lighter than any Moab 3.
We pass because of its reviews. It averages 4.3 from 1,799 ratings, and one or two stars make up nearly 12%, the highest share among the hikers here. The common complaints are sizing that runs small, toes cramped, and seams or soles coming apart within months. One buyer who wore them for a weekend could not return them and was offered 30% off a new pair instead. A Moab 3 GORE-TEX bought on sale is a safer bet.
Worth it for
- Lightest hiking shoe here at 365 g
- GORE-TEX lining and FlexPlate
Watch out for
- Highest share of one- and two-star ratings among the hiking picks
- Many reviews say it runs small
From the product page
- Waterproofing GORE-TEX membrane
- Stack height 34 to 24 mm, 10 mm drop
- Outsole Vibram TC5+, 4 mm lugs
- Weight 365 g per shoe (half pair)

What buyers complain about
Merrell’s own reviews are strong in aggregate, with Moab 3 versions averaging 4.5 to 4.6 from thousands of ratings, but the lowest-rated ones repeat three complaints. Waterproof and GORE-TEX Moabs that let water in on wet grass, sometimes within weeks. Sizing that runs small or narrow, often from longtime owners who say the Moab 3 or new Jungle Moc fits differently from the old ones. And soles that separate or wear through.
Trustpilot rates merrell.com 1.6 out of 5, “Bad”, with several reviews from the UK and Europe. Those focus on service: orders cancelled without explanation, slow replies, warranty claims refused and returns rejected over tape on a box. Merrell’s FAQ confirms orders cannot be cancelled once placed.

Questions, answered
Can I return Merrell shoes after wearing them?
Not through the standard policy. Merrell accepts free returns and exchanges of unworn items within 30 days of shipping, in the original shoebox, and orders placed from October 1 to December 31, 2026 can come back until January 31, 2027. Try shoes indoors on a clean floor first. A worn pair that fails later has to go through the warranty instead.
Does the Merrell warranty cover a waterproof shoe that starts leaking?
Only if it is a manufacturing defect within one year. The US limited warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for one year, but it excludes normal wear and the natural degradation of materials, naming waterproofing and odor control. Claims need proof of purchase and photos, and Merrell says they can take six to eight weeks to process.
Can I exchange Merrell shoes for a wide width?
No. Merrell’s returns page says exchanges can only be for the same product in a different size or color, not a different width, and only one exchange is allowed. If you need a wide, return the medium for a refund and order the wide separately. Checking whether a style is offered in wide before you buy saves the trouble.
Can I cancel a Merrell order?
Merrell’s FAQ says that once an order is placed it cannot be cancelled or changed, because it aims to ship quickly. The answer is to return the shoes unworn once they arrive. Several Trustpilot reviewers describe failing to cancel orders minutes after placing them, so double-check size and width before paying.
